I brought 10 Red Firecrackers ( Dichelostemma Ida-Maia ) in hopes of having them for Hummingbirds but they never came up so I kiss them good-by.
Now I am looking for something that can take their place in a bulb or plant. I would like something that looks like them if all possible.
If you could help me out here and gave me ideals of what would go in their place?
Red Firecrackers ( Dichelostemma Ida-Maia ) Something In It
If you mean what would bloom the same time as them, I think they bloom around now. So I would say try a Red Dianthus barbatus and Maltese Cross. I grew some Maltese CRoss from seed last year and it is in full bloom now. I've seen hummers at them and butterflies too. The Sweet Williams started blooming a little earlier, but I only saw butterflies on them, but that's not to say the hummers weren't visiting when I wasn't looking. If you have room for a vine Lonicera sempervirens is the first to bloom for my hummers and it keeps going all season, filling in any gaps with your other flowers. The hummers really like them. Also any red penstemons that bloom now would be good. I currently have P. barbatus Iron Maiden blooming, another one I grew from seed last year.
Sorry I forgot to say that the picture is of Maltese Cross.
