They look like mealy bugs, but with a shell. If I squish one, the yuck is red, like blood.

Thanks, claypa. I've removed the stalk pictured, and scraped some off another. The young leaves look unaffected, so my fingers are crossed!
Do you think something like neem oil or pyrethrin spray would kill any invisible babies?
