What's this plant?

Mountlake Terrace, WA(Zone 8a)

As usual, now that other things are blooming, I need to figure out what they are:

first one, the fern I tried to ID earlier, now it its bold self:

Fern a shot of the frond. Note it is pinnate, and very finely decorated with its leaves.

Fern #2. No idea.

Here's the Salvia that I refered to earlier this year as being 'exploded'. I 'enhanced' the image, showing a red dot at the center of the plant, and a red circle enclosing the approximate outer edge of the stems, which are laying on the ground, and bending up towards the tip.

Name and what to do with this plant. It is still close to the compost bin in my mind. But if I can get it growing straight up and down, it will be saved.

More detail on the flowers of that Salvia.

The perspective on this one is lethal. But I am wanting to ID the varigated plant near center. Its just forming buds. I think it must be a Salvia. I got it at the Spring Green Elephant.

Here's shot number two of the varigated plant.

Feverfew?

No idea.

The variegated plant looks like figwort - you got it from me. Supposed to be a bog plant, but I have it growing in a dry, sunny spot. The flowers are just about out at my place - they will be bog plant flowers (small and nondescript). But the bees will be all over it for the next couple of months.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

And yup, that looks like Feverfew or Tanicetum.

Here's a link to the Scrophularia: http://www.greatplantpicks.org/index.php?page=display&id=2827&searchterm=all

I think fern #1 might be a lady fern, a Northwest native.

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

The fern is Polystichum setiferum 'Divisilobum'

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

ahhh, growin, hello. I've been wondering where you were - how's your garden.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

AD - last picture could be Campanula. Hard to tell.
Regarding the Salvia - another way to deal with it would be to whack it back to the ground & let it start over. Is it soft in the center - as if it semi-rotted? Or was therecat/dog/other damage to the branching? My vote: give it another chance - at least one! And if you decide to chuck it - toss it my way.

Thorne Bay, AK(Zone 6b)

Analogdog-is fern #1 an evergreen? The leaf shape sure looks like swordfern, our evergreen native fern.

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

hi Laurie. My garden is doin' fine. I've been busy working at the nursery, doin' Plantfiles stuff and takin' lots of photos. I'm pretty sure that's the fern - here's a pic almost identical: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/179019/

Poulsbo, WA

The first fern looks more feathery than the sword fern. Can you get another close up?
I have the second fern volunteering here and there, so native makes sense.
I agree with Katye on the campanula, at least that was my first thought, too.
I used to have a lot of the double blossom feverfew, but got the single blossom from and neighbor and then pulled out all of the double. Now I am "into" the Golden Feather variety for its wonderful chartreuse leaves. BTW, I have a ton of GF babies this year if anyone wants some.

Is this the native lady fern?

Thumbnail by neofarmer
Thorne Bay, AK(Zone 6b)

Neofarmer-I believe that is spiny wood fern-dryopteris expansa.A close comparison of the frond form will verify that.

Poulsbo, WA

Some of the campanula's have a flatter flower, and aren't as bell shaped. It seems to me that Greek's are generally flatter. Here are a couple of links to images:

NedHudson1, gee how do you guys know all these varieties?! I was just wondering if it was the same one that AD was asking about. Now I think I'll go out and take photos of the different ferns growing in the cracks to see what I have, too.!

Ned, How are you doing? Harley told me you were back down in Bellingham. I know he was worried about you. Are you back home now?

Thorne Bay, AK(Zone 6b)

Holly-I'm still in Bellingham, but going to see a Seattle surgeon Friday. Can't have any more radiation as I had enough last year.I'll e'mail Harley after I see the surgeon.I'll know more then.

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

I called Harley on his cell to let him know you would be in Seattle. He was taking my mom home to Olympia. He says if you need any help getting around Seattle on Friday, he'd be glad to drive you around to Dr. appt. or wherever else you need to go. Or if you don't need or want that, if you'd like to get together to have lunch or talk, he'll meet you somewhere. He'll be home tonight. I sincerely hope your appointment goes well, and that there is some hopeful news.

The first of my early garlic was just harvested, so I'll either give him some to bring you or mail it to you at home once it has cured in a few weeks.

Thorne Bay, AK(Zone 6b)

Holly-I'm sending Harley an e'mail. Thanks for the offer of the garlic, but I can't eat solid food as I have no saliva, and my taste buds are still screwed up..

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

Ned, I'm sorry things are so tough right now. I'll tell Harley to look out for your e-mail when he gets back home. Holly

Thorne Bay, AK(Zone 6b)

Thanks,Holly.

I post every day on the Coffee And....thread in the Parking Lot forum.Got re-introduced to an old high school classmate in there & just kept reading & posting there.

Poulsbo, WA

Ned, I don't know you, but my heart goes out to you. Words fail.

Thorne Bay, AK(Zone 6b)

Thanks,Neofarmer-I appreciate that.

Does the answer Wood Fern look right for the fern you showed?

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

The second fern reminds me of Osmunda regalis

Ned, may I also add that I am sorry you are going through so much - we'll all be thinking good thoughts for you, I am sure.

Thorne Bay, AK(Zone 6b)

Thanks,Murmur.

Growin-the branchlets of the second fern above don't have any color to them. The Osmunda looked reddish/brown stems. Also, the Osmundis isn't native to the PNW.

WW-that's a beautiful flower.I blew it up and just looked at it for a few minutes.Thanks.

Ned, I think that is it. Here is a comparison of mine, upper, and one example of dryopteris expansa

http://www.botanypictures.com/plantimages/dryopteris%20expansa%2001%20NL%20utrecht%20uithof.jpg

It seemed like there was a variety of similar, but sometimes with subtle differences, fern types that came up for that google search.

Thumbnail by neofarmer
Mountlake Terrace, WA(Zone 8a)

On the first fern: Growin' nailed it. Polystichum setiferum 'Divisilobum' is it.

I have a copy of P&M at my side right now, and was awarded my Native Plant Steward for Washington Native Plant Society this morning. So I know it was not a Lady Fern or any other native.

Ned nailed Neo's fern. Dryopteris expansa. No question, check the silhouettes in P&M.

Kayte: thanks for the id on Scrophularia auriculata ‘Variegata’, I saw the flowers were going to be pretty small, but had no idea on the plant. GE did that to me, I have a crummy mind for names, and a hand out for more plants. Thanks too for the Feverfew confirmation. I appreciate it. It is another victim of GE, but this time I got labels, but they are now hidden by this plants resplendent nature.

Fern #2 is Osmunda regalis. I recall from when I bought it. But I believe that mine is a cultivar of some sort.

And if you want to know my secret to knowing all these names, well, it has to do with a Palm Database called Handy Shopper, but makes a dandy plant database so I know exactly what I have or killed when I ask a question.
