Various climbing supports

Aschaffenburg, Germany

I had this idea to let the MGs climb up various supports to see what this looks like. The most beautiful ones are bamboe canes, but I am using tomatoes and cacti, too. One purpurea climbs up on a small CD rack that I picked up for a dollar at the local super market. It makes a terrific house plant now...

That's pretty cool, Martin, great idea!

Who would have ever thought to use a CD rack as a trellis for MGs? LOL! Pretty interesting idea, Martin! :-)

I use bamboo, various trellises, and fences as supports for mine. I hadn't really thought "outside the box" for other supports! Great idea!

Becky, now how did I know I would see you here??LOL I got the bamboo supports for the morning glory seeds you sent me. Still waiting to plant them though, this heat wave is too much, if i plant anything now, I'm afraid they won't make it!! But I do have a really pretty pot and the supports ready and waiting ;o)

The cd rack is a cool idea though... perfect for inside or out ;o)

Melissa - LOL! Plant those seeds!!! Use MiracleGro "Moisture Control" potting mix. And then water them daily until they germinate. Then water them as needed. They LOVE the heat and will grow unbelievably for you! Get a big pot so the roots have plenty of room. Do you have any watersorb crystals? I think there is a co-op going on for watersorb right now. I use a little watersorb in my pots (and in the ground) as well. Just some suggestions! But ya need to plant those seeds!!!! :-)

LOL!! Okay Becky, I'm on it!! I pinky promise ;o) I don't have any of those crystals though, maybe next time.

That's okay, Melissa. If you use the Moisture Control potting mix, it will help keep the moisture in the pot to keep the developing roots cool and watered. Don't plant those seeds too deep. Just about an 1" deep. If the temps are warm enough (ha. ha!), the seeds should germinate pretty quickly. Within a week. (But some do take longer.) Good luck!!!

Okay Becky.... right now I have lots of Mircle Grow Organic Potting mix, but I can stop by the HD on the way back frm my in-laws to get the Moisture Control potting mix. One more question... should I put them on the side of the house that gets more shade? or would the all day sun effect the germination process in a bad way? I don't want to lose these, they are so pretty ;o) I just loved all the trade packets I got from you!! I just especially wanna get the MGs going, I love vines ;o) Oh and of course the Giant Moonflower and the Necklace Pod, is it too hot for those? or just right? and again shade or sun? I know we talked about it all through dmail, but with the temps in triple digits here for at least another week, I don't wanna lose anything :o( and I'm not sure if the temp change wll change the way I need to start the germination process.

Thank you Becky, one of my fellow Nuts, helping this newbie Nut out!! I do appreciate it :o)

I would give them morning sun, afternoon shade. You can start all the seeds. Necklace Pod becomes drought tolerant as it gets bigger. All the MG vines need watering daily or every other day in your heat. They will look wilted when the sun is beating on them, but will recover later on when they are shaded. If not, then they probably need to be watered. I use Bloom Booster after the vines are starting to take off to get blooms. I mix it with Fish Emulsion and then water the soil around the roots with this fertilizer mix. It really does the trick for me! The blooms only stay open in the morning unless they are shaded. The Japanese use parasols to shade them to keep the blooms going longer.:-)

My father has a bunch of bamboo that I could cut and use. I am always trying to find things to grow vines on as my wrought iron fence doesn't work very well because the deer eat the vine from the other side. Can you explain how you make a bamboo trellis?
