I think I'm dying...anything above 75 and I start whining. And yes, once again I haven't gotten things in the ground before it gets too hot...snivel, snivel, snivel.....'they' said 104 here yesterday, but the thermometer outside one window said 114 and I tend to believe it.
Is it winter yet?
I feel the same as you about the temperatures! We only hit 103 yesterday but it was still pretty miserable, and then it was still 85 when I went to bed last night so I had to leave the windows shut and the AC on all night. And this morning when I went out to grab the paper it already felt hot at 7:30 in the morning, so I think it's going to be another scorcher. I really hate heat!
Miserable here yesterday, too.
My sister in Simi Valley said it was 112 there yesterday, but she didn't care because the heat makes her hair go straight !!!
I'm taking up a collection for my water bill......I expect it to run about $5,000...anyone want to chip in ..lol.....
Oh, wait, I forgot...I'm supposed to conserve so 'they' can build more houses.....
Well, at least my body picked a good time to go sour on me. I've been inside all day trying to sleep myself well. The wind was whipping the trees around like they were in a blender about noon. And, Mike, was the windmill ever getting a workout!! The plumeria at least will like the heat - though not the wind.
This weather is insane!!!!!!! My well watered Hydrangeas and Farfugiums are totally wilted and they don't get a bit of sunshine!! Believe it or not we were actually busy at the nursery I work at....and it was 107 in the shade!!! WCGypsy I feel for you and I live in Vista where at 6:18 it is still over 90...so much for that climactic wonderland crap they say about Vista....Hawaii here I come!
Andy
My hydrangeas were wilted too. At least some of them were and some of my farfugium and ligularias too. I gave them more water but doubt that was really a problem. The hydrangeas seldom come back the way they were after a major wilt like this one though. :-( Thank goodness it's supposed to cool off tomorrow. There is already a relatively cool breeze blowing through my garden this evening.
...and this is just the BEGINNING of summer !!!
Great weather though for starting Zinnias !
And my Cannas, Lilies, Daylilies, Crocosmia, and Hibiscus have never looked better. My rose garden is suddenly a tropical garden instead. The roses are all frizzled and the tropicals are blooming like mad.
Andy, I was thinking of you today, out working in the heat and figuring that nobody would be plant shopping in 104 degree heat anyway. All I've done for two days is water, water, water. Vista is usually about 10-11 degrees cooler than we are in Fallbrook, so it must be cooling off some for you there. This is when we start thinking of the Pacific Northwest again. This is also why I've been planting more and more stuff in part shade. Got a bad feeling about our coming summer....
After all this heat, I am really starting to have a deep respect for alot of the plants in the nursery that will tolerate this weather...Cosmos, Salvias, Gaillardias, Phlomis, Coreopsis etc. I am proud to say the nursery where I work looks pretty good considering.
I am betting this summer will be warmer and wetter than normal as the high pressure air masses seem to keep setting themselves up in a perfect position to sweep up the heat and humidity from Mexico and channel it our way.
BTW Sherry, I have a Salvia you can't live without....'Van Houttii Dancing Flames' ...you need this one badly if you don't already have it!
Kathleen: Glad the windmill is providing some relief ! (Point it towards the house ! )
Comic relief, yes! I really like being able to look out the window and know that Breezedale's breeze is still there!
The weatherman said it was supposed to be cooler today....wrong!! It is as hot out there as it was yesterday.
I was supposed to go up today and work on finishing my dads patio cover that I'm building and finally came to my senses that it was going to be just too darned hot. We are putting the top rafters on, so we would have been above the roof line with the white wood shining up at us. I called him this morning and said "dad, it's too hot", he agreed.
So, now what do I do today? lol
My brugmansia look like wet dish rags hanging down. Pitiful!
Todays a good day to go to the movies. Now, what piece of nonsense do I want to spend $8.50 on?
Mary
Got a good book? I finished one and started another yesterday. lol By last night, I was nearly half-way through it, so I need to slow down.
I have one ticked off husband today because the car race didn't record like it was supposed to. Too hot to send him to his hammock, so I'm trying to think of some simple thing I can ask him to do to take his mind off it.
Sixty three degrees at eleven o'clock in the morning and fifteen gallons of weeds into the recyclers pickup container so far. My empathy for your heat knows no bounds. As a youngster growing up in Riverside/San Bernardino these hot days were killers. Our 'heat wave' of last week got up into the eighties. Nice temperature to sit with a cool Gin and Tonic and await the inevitable rain.
Mary, going to the movies (for 25 cents, 15 for matinée) or the swimming pool at the YMCA was the primary keep-cool solution for we kids back then. Hope that picture perfect weather California is famous for returns soon.
Here is a little snapshot to help cool you down.
Andy, I do need another Dancing Flame...lost the one I had. I think that one's a little touchy. I definitely want the Verona and I'm interested in whatever the two tone micro is. If you let me know when they come in, I'll be there. Bringing you a 'Raspberry Truffle', but I apparently forgot to label whether it was cutting or seed grown. So,you may have the rasp or, who knows, an interesting seedling.
I'm spending my day by having already gone to breakfast at Mimi's with my friend Rosa where I stuffed myself on really yummy stuff and having gotten little sleep last night am gonna try to nap in front of the fan, maybe. I'm sure I should be out watering more, but just can't.
balvenie, you have no idea how much I wish I were there....I think we will have to move back up there soon.
It's cooled off here too. Had lunch in the gazebo and it was lovely. All of the hydrangas are rehydrated and looking fine. That was a couple of really hot days. Sorry that it's continuing in the south you guys. That is a definite bummer.
"Much cooler" here today...only in the mid 80's
The "water police" are handing out fines right and left around here to people who violate the watering restrictions...especially people who wash their cars with the hose running. They either bust you in person, or send it to you in the mail.
I've never been happier to have a well.
The heat wave is definitely over up here. I had to put on a jacket when I was working in the shady part of the garden this afternoon.
When we were living in Contra Costa, we bought a house that turned out to have an abandond well in an old barn. This was in about '77 or '78, drought, water rationing had just gone into effect and we had just lost our canal water also. Dropped a casing and pump in and started pumping water. We had all of the old-time neighbors standing around in awe, nobody had ever known the well was there. We were being rationed down to 180 gallons a day at that time. That is the tiniest drop in the bucket compared to what we use today on this property. We believe the water level is pretty high at the back part of our property, so we really should check into putting a well in here. Of course, now they want to charge you for pumping water rom a well, meter how much you're using.
It's cooling a bit down here, but not nearly enough.......I'll send you all of my un-used jackets, Zuzu
I am hot here too and thinking I wanted to be in California. Not if you all are as hot as we are!!
It's much cooler here today, Marie. I turned the a/c off and the breeze is doing its thing.
We actually had to move our outside lunch on Sunday because it was too cool. We moved to a sheltered part of the patio and it was lovely though.
Now you guys are just bragging......and I've finally accepted the idea that I'm not gonna see any daytime temps below 80 for the next 4 months....what I'd give to move10-15 miles west...sigh...
Me too! LOL Our temps are still better than yours though, except in the winter when I'm getting frost every other night! Our weather has been funny up here this spring/summer, it seems like it's always either 100 degrees out or it's cold, there doesn't seem to be anything in between!
Nice and breezy today, what a relief!
It was actually cold here today around 5. I LOVED it! LOL
If you guys don't stop making it sound so good up there, you're going to wake up to someone camping on your doorstep...what time is breakfast?
You'd better come for tea. It's too cold in the morning to serve breakfast in the garden! LOL
LOL, what a difference a few days make!
Well, I have to admit that this morning is nice, got our marine layer back. This is weekend is supposed to once again be a scorcher though. I set up for potting with a large fan to keep me thinking there is a breeze and it's not so bad. It used to be that on those hot days we'd just take the top off the Jeep and head up the coast, now I have to stop and think about spending 60 bucks just on gas for the day. We now stay home and complain about the heat a lot more. I promise that I've done allof my whining about the heat......
It is odd how we haven't had our regular June-gloom. I've heard that from three people this week. It's good here - I just wish we could solve the heat buildup at night. I can't sleep with the windows open. Well, let me put it another way - I can't breathe with the windows open at night. lol We have the ceiling fan on a thermostat, but even with that on all night it's yucky. Might have to resort to turning on the a/c at night, which we don't want to do.
Gypsy...I'm still using a down blanket on my bed-it cools way off at night-need a jacket in the mornings. :-)
It's been near perfect here, at least at my house. I have lots of trees, however.
