Thanks. It is not a strong smell, though. I have to stick my nose right in it to smell it.
I love the Tjads. I have a Macrophylla variegated. Is that same thing?
June flowas Part 2
It is thought to be, Katie...
I have macrophylla variegata that I got in a trade. Is that the one you are saying is the same as the sp. 1420? Should it be labeled with both the sp. number and the name?
H. lamonica is really, really nice! I love the looks of that bloom, and the name makes me think it should smell like lemon-lime.
Lin...it is the variegated H. macrophylla that is thought to be a variegated H. tjad.. - but not necessary to change all the tags as far as I know....
Thanks Carol. It doesn't take much to confuse me anymore, LOL. I will just leave my tag as it is marked, H. macrophylla variegata.
Maybe royal hawaiian purple? LOL ... that's just a guess because of the color of the flower. I have no clue about any of them! I just got a cutting of royal hawaiian purple in the spring DL co-op - can't wait for it to grow and bloom and if it does happen to look like that I will be ecstatic! That's a beauty!
I just went to Plant Files and found H. pubicalyx royal hawaiian purple: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/57671/

It sure looks like it.

RHP and Red Buttons are very similar in looks....side by side you can tell the difference because the RHP leaves are larger overall....
Thanks Carol, I was thinking Red Buttons myself. I can say either or at least.
Thanks ceedub,
Cool Mark...really cool!!!
Mark - nice photo of a beautiful flower. So, what does it smell like?
Karen
Karen, it's kind of hard to say. People often say carnosa smells like chocolate, and it does kind of remind me of chocolate or cocoa, but not exactly. I think most Hoya smell "sort of" like something, but rarely exactly like it.
Ssp. oramicola smells sort of like some kind of sweet baked good, kind of like almond, kind of like ginger. It smells a bit like plain old australis ssp. australis, but in my opinion even better.
Mmmm ... sweet baked goods, almond, ginger ... or even sorta like chocolate/cocoa, sure sounds good to me!
I have one plant just labeled H. australis that I got from a friend last year, no blooms yet though. I look forward to blooms some day and if they smell wonderful that will be like icing on the cake!
Lin...H. austrlis can take quite a bit of indirect light...even direct if early morning or after 3 pm about. Yesterday I saw one growing and blooming in full sun!!! Leaves looked washed out but...hey....
Awanda: That cv. noelle is lovely, very delicate looking.
Carol, Good to know about the light for australis. About a month ago I moved my H. australis to the east side of the house where it gets a little sun in the early morning then bright light all day. It seems to be putting on a lot of growth since moving it from dense shade to the brighter light! It looks a lot happier.

What a beauty you have there. What does it smell like? Is it outdoors?
Thanks for sharing,
Dee
hi Dee yes it is outdoors for the summer, and smells overpoweringly and not nicely like roses and hyacynths!
