The Iowa Regional Lily Society wil be holding our annual Lily Show at the Merle Hays Plaza in Des Moines on June 20 & 21. Judging starts at 9:30 am on Saturday. It's a great chance to meet some of our local DGers as well as enjoy some beautiful lilies!
Anyone is welcome to enter lily stems to win prizes and awards. My garden is running 2 weeks or so late, so I'll only have a stem or 2 to bring. Lots of buds, just not many blooms!
Here is our IRLS website: http://www.irls.org/index.html
Lily Show in Des Moines , Iowa!
For sure; come on over, down, up...................we'd love to have you and your stems!
I too, just have a couple of stems, I'm either to far along or not far enough.....Moby leave this alone.........LOL
HUH?? ;) Wish I could join you but have another commitment.
Moby, What?!? You say you're being committed?? Oh No!!! :)
That's news??
Jeez, way to kill all the drama. :) LOL
Enjoy! Once more I am not able to get down there.
Dang, I wish I had seen this thread before the weekend. I might have made the roadtrip on Saturday.
I hope you all had a wonderful time.
Not very many stems and absolutely no artistic designs at all!!!!!!!!! But we had a good time. My DD and DGKs came over for several hours and we all had lunch and made devious plans LOL OK, not really...there were little eard listening big time to all we said and watching all we did so we were all on pretty good behavior.
Iowaron, Wandasflowers and myself were student judges and IowaAnn joined the judging to see how we arrived at our placings. I'll try to get some pictures up later, it is back to the work grind for a few days at least.
I didn't take any pics--Sue will have to post them. NOW my lilies are starting to open--too late for the Lily Show. I was only able to bring 4 stems & none of them were prime.
Wow, pretty sad turnout. What happened? I was there and fell in love with the unknown martagon!!! What a beauty! How can I get a bulb for that one?
The main problem was no one had any stems that were ready.
Seldom do we have martagons at the show because the season is usually past. Very few asiatic and LAs had begun to open.
I must admit I was terribly disappointed that there were no artistic designs. Our show mirrored the MARLS show in the horticultural division, but they far outshone us in the artistic.
The unknown martagon was mine...........maybe we can talk later.
Sue, did you take a picture of the unknown? Come on . . give it up!
Graffiti . . . didn't know I loved graffiti
What are the rules for display and what is that plus on the top of the vase?
And the vases all look identical; do they put them out for you to use and you just bring the stem?
?
and what is that plus on the top of the vase?
In a nutshell:
Section A are all registered lilium grown by the presenter
Section B might be named or un-named grown by the presenter, but is not registered
The Society owns the display tubes and stands and provides them for the exhibitors

right in the top of the vase it looks like a cork or something to hold the stem so it doesn't flop around.
in this case it was either rhubarb or sphagnum moss to hold the stems upright and in place.
Rhubarb has the advantage of allowing space to fill the vases, I think the sphagnum looks better, but is a pain to add water.
Our head judge did not like the moss, but it is all they used down in St. Louis.
Terrace City hybrid shown as a group of 3 stems - judged for uniformity of each stem compared to the other two.
They were shown by the same exhibitor as Purple Reign and Heloma
Thanks for the info; very interesting.
Ok, don't know why I didn't look at my Martagon CD before the show.
My unknown martagon is 'Nepera'
Arlene,
I was just looking at the show schedule for North Star and their sections are different from ours. So, one would have to read each show schedule to know exactly what is required for each show.
The Fort Dodge Garden Club does some kind of thing at the Mall and noticed theirs was different. Then the local county Fair has different rules than the displays at the 4-H fair.
The shows are open to non-Lily Society members too. I only had for different lilies blooming, so that's all I brought. TODAY is much odffernt. We need to have our show later in June to allow for LAs, OT, Trumpets and other lillium to be in bloom.
