CLOSED: CLOSED: Re: Insect found at Picnic

Wapwallopen, PA

A friend's son found a bright, blue-green iridescent insect at a picnic near Wyomissing, PA. It was 1 - 1.5cm in length. I was not able to get a picture of it, but it did appear to have small wings. Is this enough info for someone to give a good idea of ID? Thanks!

There are at least two possibilities: (1) a cuckoo wasp (Hymenoptera: Chrysididae) - see http://www.pbase.com/tmurray74/image/67705680, or (2) a solitary bee in the family Halictidae - see http://www.pbase.com/tmurray74/image/68413634; ‘sweat bees’ belong to this family.

Thanks again, suunto! If my memory serves me correctly, I believe it resembled the cuckoo wasp.

I feared it might be an emerald ash borer, glad to hear you think it's a wasp. At work, I see cuckoo wasps running very fast on fascia boards and other house trim near wasps' and carpenter bees' nests. They are striking!
