This was on our deck in the Hudson Valley, NY ... didn't seem to be a flier because when I touched it it just walked away ... what is it????
CLOSED: Bug with Fool-You Eyes
This is an eyed elater (Alaus oculatus; Coleoptera: Elateridae), the largest click beetle native to North America. its larvae, unlike those of most other click beetles, are predaceous. See http://www.stephencresswell.com/s/elaters.html for more information on this species as well as its close relative, the small-eyed or blind elater.
Wow - that was fast! Thanks ... it was kinda cute and I was hoping it wasn't a bad guy ...
