Hibiscus seeds

Wharton, TX(Zone 9a)

I collected some seeds today from a Hibsicus bush. They were in a dried up pod. The seeds look black, plump and healthy. When can I start these seeds? I'm in the Houston area?

You can start them now. I just started some Texas Star Hibiscus seeds and they came up in 3 or 4 days. Started some saucer hibiscus seeds today. They seem to love this heat.

Did you just put them in a pot? are they outdoors?

I filled one of those plastic deli containers with MG potting soil, with holes in the bottom and also the lid and scattered them covering lightly. I kept the lid closed until they sprouted to keep the moisture in. They are outside in the shade. I plan on separating them to separate containers when they get a little bigger. Here is a picture.

Thank you. That sounds easy enough. Photo says it all. I'll get on the case in the next few days....

hi there pestee, Nothing so far. I planted the seeds well over week ago in a mixture of seed starter soil and organic potting soil. Half and half. I covered the pot with a clear plastic bag and put it outside in the shade and heat. Got my fingers crossed.

Hmmm. Well seems like they should have sprouted by now. Maybe their just taking longer. I'm definitely no expert. Don't give up though. Sounds like you did everything right.

I'll keep you informed if a miracle should happen and they sprout...

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

I planted some tropical hibiscus seeds and it took around two weeks or longer for them to germinate. They are up now about 2 ". Only two germinated out of 20 seeds. They are outdoors on the patio in 4" pots, uncovered.

Mine still show nothing. I planted 6 so if out of 20 you got 2 to sprout, texasgal, mine don't seem to have much of a chance. Will not give up though....

I'd just wait awhile, you never know! Good Luck!

oooooooh, I'm so sorry. Mine got about 3" high. I guess they are OK. I haven't looked at them in a couple of days.....maybe a week. I should go check them out.

I'll let you know what's up later!
