Lightening and it's mighty power

Milford, CT(Zone 6a)

Hi Guys, I missed you all! We have had some terrible storms sweeping through here for weeks. High winds, flooding and wild thunder and lightening. The lightening has been incredibly violent and the damage has been considerable. I had a tree struck and felled by a bolt that came down smack in the middle of my garden...but the worst hit was to my modem (which died suddenly and violently) due to a lightening strike and that kept me off-line for over two weeks. I'm back in business now but I really missed my friends over here at DG!!!!!! How is everybody?

Carrigan, I too was without a modem for a couple weeks earlier in the season; DG withdrawal was awful! I think we can safely call this the Summer of Modem-Killing Storms, LOL!

Welcome back!!!!!

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Welcome back and so glad that you were unscathed. I hate storms!! Sorry about your tree!

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

So glad you got it fixed! I hope the damage outside is not too bad! We lost 3 Huge pine trees in a storm awhile back and I thought we would never get finished cleaning up the mess!

Hi Carrigan! Glad to hear that only your modem was messed up and you or your loved ones incurred no "damage"- lightning is just so powerful and awesome ( as long as it's far away). Hope nothing else got messed up! It seems like it takes forever to catch up on DG news- I was away for awhile ans STILL have so much "catching up" to do! By the way- Milford is a lovely part of the Northeast! I ency your fall weather!

WOW....I guess I'm not the only one who has had their modem blow up on them!!!! Thankfully the damage to the yard was not too bad aside from some broken and crushed plants in the garden and one section of damaged fence!!!! The tree is still decorating my backyard but hopefully that will be removed soon and some semblance of "normalcy" will be returned.

It wasn't my moden this summer, it was the mother-board. We had had storms, but no lightening strikes that we knew of. They thought it was just a short. DG withdrawal is terrible, but I did get more done. Welcome back.

The surge protector certainly failed and I swear I will definitely be unplugging everything from now on! LOL! Wish I knew then what I know now!

Welcome back Carrigan'Y'll been
getting some nasty weather this
year'I've kept logs of our weather
over 20+ yrs. here and this year
was a first for our area' The wind
has been coming out of the north
over 90% of the year'If it continues,
our winter could get verrry interest-
ing'The past 3yrs. the lightning has
increased dramatically too'Been in plenty
of those "noreasters" too hope we don't end
up with the same here, lol''Take care and
glad you survived your "withdrawls"LOL''

Milford, CT(Zone 6a)

Thanks Sis, I have noticed that the weather has been very unruly here this season and I too am wondering what this winter will be bringing us!!!

My DH used to laugh at me when a storm
threatened until our neighbors house ex-
ploded from a strike and our other neigh-
was nearly killed driving in his pickup'
Where we live we take weather Very Serious,
keep my scanner on too'

Glad u r safe, Carrigan. People can replace modems, but not the other way! Safety lessons to be learnt, here.

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

My mother always taught me to unplugstuff...I guess I hsould listen more huh??

I heard some benificial effect of lightening hitting the ground and reviving it for 100 years. Any beargin to that? or facts to back that up? Wouldn't mind learning more about it.

DG Withdrawl...LOL, just think what our garden would look like if we didnt stay online so much. But on the flip side, what would our gardens look like without DG?? Mine would have been a lot less full that is for sure!

HERE we had a lady in Ladysmith, just 15 mi. from here , struck right in the eye while filming it on video camera, thank god she was not injured.

Lightening can be very scary stuff. I was struck while talking on the telephone when I was a kid. The force of it threw me about 15 feet across the room into the opposite wall. I woke up with a grossly swollen face and no memory of what happened. Another time we had a lightening stike at my parents house and evidently it traveled through the electical wiring behind the walls...every lamp in our house was throwing out these wierd blue glowing balls that actually made a whizzing sound as they moved!!!!! The next day my dad and I had to go around with a screwdriver to pry the metal base of the bulbs out of the lamps...they had been welded in! I just can't help it now, I am really afraid of lightening and the funny thing is that I now live on the water where the storms are ALWAYS violent!!!! I sit in my house and listen to the sound of my teeth chattering competing with the sound of these old windows rattling! LOL

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

I wondered what happened to you. I thought you might have gone on vacation. To bad it couldn't have been the microwave instead of the computer but then you couldn't have cooked those GOOD OL BISQUITS.lol I really missed you and glad to see you back. Have you tried the bisquits yet??

Milford, CT(Zone 6a)

Thanks Jimmy Dear I missed sassy ole you as well. Did I try those bisquits?...honey I have put on ten pounds of pure bisquit since you posted that recipe. They are heavenly!!!!! I make them all of the time now, my family loves them!
