Something new to garden on!!

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

A storm shelter! Now I just have to figure out what I want to put on it. I have to wait until the dirt settles anyway.

There's the inside, it seats up to 12, or a sleeping sole! :)

Wow, I've never seen an actual storm shelter like that before. Thank you for posting photos. Do you get tornados down there?

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Well, I've been in Arkansas only a year and last year between Jan 1 and Dec 31 we had 16 tornados state wide. The state average is 23 a year, this year between Jan 1 and May 15th we had 50, two of them tracked directly over my house, one touched down 3 miles East in a neighborhood that has Never been hit and there were trees that were at least 100 years old that were taken down and the other never touched but we got the large hail and all the neighbors heard the same whistling sound. None of the old trees around here were damaged, and I know that 2 out of 50 isn't anything, but all it takes is one.

Thanks! It's fiberglass. It cost about $1000 more than a cement one, but the guy was quick, nice, and professional. It's really cool! The only problem I'm going to have is the dirt settling under the staircase. I'm going to have to shovel dirt into the space that settled for a little while. I'm trying to figure out if I want to plant flowers on it or if I just want the grass to cover it, or both.

Having it will surely help give you some piece of mind.

Good luck on deciding for grass or flowers, I'd have a hard time making that choice!

Wow, I didn't know they made storm shelters like that. That's amazing. It looks just like a "bomb" shelter from the 1950s. LOL.

The one we have is concrete and opens in the side of the hill, just like a little room in there. My grandma's was always just a dug-out space shored up with timber and lined with shelves. She used it as a root cellar/canned goods storage space when she wasn't ducking tornadoes.

It does give me peace of mind. I was going to try it out in "the next thunderstorm." Well, the "next" thunderstorm came in the middle of the night and there was no way I was going out there at night in a drenching downpour unless I absolutely had to LOL So the next Daytime thunderstorm I'll try it out!

I was calling it an egg, my coworked called it a pod LOL

I like "pod" it is kinda "sciencfictionie"

(Zone 7a)

Hey, Crissy! I just discovered this. It very Sci-Fi-ey! LOL Pod is better.

You should plant both grasses and flowers. Your irises are going in and what else have you got?

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

"Pod" orkd or m too

Ok, lets try this again, "Pod" worked for me too. Ya'll shouldv'e seen my cat, when she noticed it she ran over to it and hopped on in! It was hilarious!

I almost bought a cement one, seems like it would stay in the ground a lot better LOL but the waiting list was way too long. I am such a dork, I asked the guy if it would get sucked up in the tornado!

(Zone 7a)

All I'm hearing is the Wicked Witch music from The Wizard of Oz!!! LOL

Waynesboro, MS(Zone 8a)

I think I would put a cement slab over it and build a garden shed or gazebo using the slab as the floor. That way you would not get as wet and the slab would be added protection.

What a good idea! I'll check the warranty on it. Until then, I need more dirt, when it rained the dirt settled and it's about 5" lower than the door and part of the shelter to the left of the door is exposed. Hmmmmm

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Celia!! Great to see you here! I don't have anything to plant except for those sad irises. I'm not going to be planting anything on it until I get dirt. I think I have some left in the yard but I have to get to it this evening. I need to check the weather, it's staring to cloud up. It better not rain, I have red clay and it doesn't shovel very well if it's wet or damp.
