You From Texas?

Hill Country, TX(Zone 8a)

Bubba, congratulations on your upcoming anniversary.
We are also Texans as a result of DH's military career, and so glad to be here.
Believe it or not, he began his military life in San Antonio in 1947, when it was Lackland Army Air Force Base. That was before they separated the two service branches. That was a lot of years ago, and he was 14...He lied! LOL
We have been happily married for over 50 years, and he is my best and closest friend.

Love your "handle", Caliche.

Knew you had to be a "hill country" DG'er.
50+ that's outstanding!

We will be making another wine tour - trying to get as many signatures as we can in our copy of 'The Wine Roads of Texas" - and also hitting as many craft brewers as we can - great article in the July Texas Highways.

We've been in Tx for 33 yrs and wonder why it wasn't sooner. Love the state and the people too, lots of fun to be had and everyone willing to help one another. We're in Onalaska, 90 miles N of Houston and 13 miles west of Lake Livingston. Did any of your children try to explain what over yonder meant to a yankee? Or ask them if they want a mato sandwich.

Karla, you are funny!!!
Which reminds me of an awful lunch, but for some of those not involved, probably was funny.
While in Miami, both me and my husband were (old) students at UM. And we would meet for lunch almost everyday, sometimes just the two of us, sometimes with friends. And there was a beautiful area within our buildings, with a fountain in the middle, surrounded by a paved zone, with tables and little benches with umbrellas. And, you can imagine, during lunch hours, those were usually filled with people.
Apart from that, there were a few tall palm trees, with some tables and their little benches scattered underneath the (poor) shade of the palms, no umbrellas. You could say there was more wild life involved around these tables (!), but they would fill quickly nonetheless. Well, one lunchtime, while waiting for my DH with the lunch, one of these former tables freed, and I was very quick to occupy it, together with one of our friends. I haven't eaten anything until that hour, I only had some coffee (in a ceramic mug, a very nice mug actually), that I brought with me to finish during lunch...
I saw my DH "at the horizon", over the rim of my coffee mug... and while sipping passionately, i saw something drop in my lovely mug. As my friend said to my husband: "it was some bird-poop"... I wasn't able to say anything at that time, I was too busy "eliminating" all the coffee I drank for that day...
I still have the mug though!

Bubba....thanks! I picked that handle because caliche is what I must garden in, along with an abundant supply of rocks. Thank goodness ..at least it is better than gumbo to deal with.

Goofy...I loved your story....I could just visualize the situatiion from your good description. LOL

Hello, friends!
Yesterday I've had a very difficult day, but I made it! We are officially done with putting everything in place. Don't ask about my back though... Hey, it's been a long time since I stopped considering myself skinny, but I've never trained for heavy-lifting either!
I ended the day in a "low mood" note, so I'm happy that I did not scare you with my story. I also got jealous of all the meetings/RU's that are/will be happening so far away... I guess, for the time being, I have to settle with meeting you and getting to know you from the posts.
Let me tell you the greatest things that happened to me yesterday:
- I was the witness to the most beautiful sunset! a few low clouds were guarding the horizon and they turned purple against the red sky... such a view, and it's from my backyard.
- I went to the back yard (again) close to midnight, and that was such a wonderful breeze! Oh, jolly gosh! you wouldn't believe! Just like a dream! And the last flowers of my gardenia gave such a nice scent to it! YUMM!

Bless your heart Goofy, but now all of that is behind you and nothing to good things ahead. We all wish you could be closer too, Texas is a very vast state, but you never know.....I made the very first Roundup in Crossville, TN in 2002, so you see........anything is possible.

Bubba, are "we" there yet? Happy anniversary!

Let me tell you gals and guys my latest El Paso experience. Last Saturday my DH had his work-related welcome party. The skies were cloudy all afternoon. So we went to the party (pool party it was called, but there was no swimming involved, thank God! I wouldn't swim at a "first encounter" with my DH's coworkers...). And guess what? IT RAINED! well, a few drops, but that was water falling from the sky!
When we got home later that night, we went to our backyard. The grass, soil and pavement were bone-dry. I either missed the few drops in the garden, or it didn't rain at home...
A bit of frustration going on, thinking I missed the rain at home...
Than, on Monday, IT HAPPENED AGAIN! and this time, I was home to enjoy! and it was a more serious rain, so I was so excited! It was knocking on the roof, and it gave my poor lawn a good soak. We were both sitting outside in the backyard laughing. Oh, happy day (or evening, for that matter)!

Had a wonderful anniversary - there was a street festival on Houston Street and bull riding in front of the Alamo.

The local craftbrew (Alamo Amber Ale), and Dry Comal Creek Winery were available. BBQ po-boys, roasted corn, kettle corn, tortas, chocolates, pasta, honey roasted pecans and almonds, and lots of other vendors.

It was a young peoples event, and some of the singers were as good or better than the American Idol group. We may see some of these in a couple of years.

Shared a big ole chateaubriand at the Barn Door, a couple of drinks at the Menger Bar, then headed to our room to open the champagne.

Had just opened the bottle when there was a knock on the door - the bartender had sent room service with a tray of fruit and a couple of champagne flutes. Love this place,

okay eyes will have to take offense to the one that everyone north of Dallas has an accent! I know where you live & girl you are only 20 miles from the Okie border there in "Toadsuck" so that must make you a yankee too.....just jerking your chain, girl...LOL! Anyway your datura is still looking for a home if you still want it - mine opened up 10 blooms last night so if you want to grow it big you best get'er in the ground soon. By the way I've been transplanted here for almost 27 yrs. now (26 of those w/ my DH ) & the 1st job I ever had here was at a 7-11 in the stop six area of Ft Worth & remember quite well not being able to understand what type of cigarettes this man was asking me for & swear I had picked up every pack behind that counter & he kept saying no so I finally just told him to come around and show me & he had been saying "Winston" the whole time & I had to use the Geek Squad from Best Buy 1 time over the phone & their call center was in India & the guy kept asking me all these goofy ?'s about Texas like do we all wear guns & ride horses& have oil wells in our yards & I almost pissed myself laughing that people still think we are in the 1800's here ( by the way yes I did tell him we all wore guns, rode horses & had oil wells - probably set Texas back 100 yrs. to people in India but it was fun) For some reason if you go north of the border & open your mouth they know where you're from! Can't figure that one out yet y'all!

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

LOL..........yep! That's right....hey I know people with derricks on their land, and they do ride 'round on horses.....and if ya look real close, I'd be willin' to bet there's a gun somewheres....but, hey, correction there...I'm 19 miles as the crow flies from the OK border...that's okay to 'cause 'eyes' knows a great bunch of Okies too! Going up to Kingston tomorrow to see one of those great Okies what rustled...er..carried a bunch of my plants home with him. You gonna be home tomorrow....I'll call on my way back and see if'n I can stop by yer place there in Whitesbro'...email to follow.
