You From Texas?

Things I learned grow'n up in Texas

Armadillos sleep in the middle of the road with all four feet in the air.

There are 5,000 types of snakes and 4,998 live in Texas.

There are 10,000 types of spiders. All 10,000 live in Tex as, plus a few no one has ever seen before.

Raccoons will test your melon crop, and let you know when they are ripe.

If it grows, it will stick you. If it crawls, it will bite you!

Nothing will kill a mesquite tree.

There are valid reasons some people put razor wire around their
house.

A tractor is NOT an all terrain vehicle. They do get stuck.

The wind blows at 90 mph from Oct 2 till June 25; then it stops
totally until October 2.

Onced and twiced are words.

Coldbeer is one word

People actually grow and eat okra.

Green grass DOES burn.

When you live in the country you don't have to buy a dog. City
people drop them off at your front gate in the middle of the night.

The sound of coyotes howling at night only sounds good for the
first few weeks.

When a buzzard sits on the fence and stares at you, it's time to
see a doctor.

Fix-in-to is one word.

There ain't no such thing as "lunch". There is only breakfast,
dinner and then there's supper.

"Sweetened ice tea" is appropriate for all meals, and you start
drinking it when you are two. You also give it to babies for colic..Just
a tid-bit.

"Backards and forards" means I know everything about you.

"Jeet?" is actually a phrase meaning, "Did you eat?"

You don't have to wear a watch because it doesn't matter what
time it is. You work until you're done, or it's too dark to see.

You measure distance in minutes or hours.

You can switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day.

Stores don't have bags. They have sacks.

You see cars with the engine running in the Wal-mart parking lot
with no one in them, no matter what time of the year.

All the festivals across the state are named after a fruit or a
vegetable.

You install security lights on your house and garage, and leave
both unlocked.

You carry jumper cables for your own car.

You know what "cow tipping" and "snipe hunting" are.

You only have four spices in your kitchen: Salt, Pepper,
Ketchup, and Pepersaus.

You think everyone from north of Dallas has an accent.

The local papers cover national and international news on one
page, but require six pages to cover Friday night high school football.

The first day of deer season is a state holiday.

You find 100 degrees a "tad" warm.

The four seasons are: Almost summer, summer, still summer and
Christmas.

You know whether another Texan is from East, West, North, or
South Texas as soon as he opens his mouth.

Going to wal-mart is a favorite past-time known as 'goin Wal-martin or or 'off to Wally-world.

You describe the first cool snap (below 70 degrees) as good Chili-eatin weather.

A carbonated soft drink isn't a soda, cola, or pop...It's a Coke regardless of brand or flavor.

Uh huh...........that's 'bout right, I'd say.

Where did I land? LOL, "eyes"! Two thumbs up for the charming presentation.

11 days old Texan (and counting) has a question: Does sweetened iced tea have any alcohol in it? It would surely help me get past the 10,000 spiders...

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Naw, if ya did that Goofy, you'd end up with New England Ice Tea with a Texas Twang!

Universal City, TX(Zone 8b)

Goofybulb,

I'm glad you at least got to see SA. Try and get here during fiesta. Everyone north of the Colorado thinks there's no culture south of it. San Antonio is here to prove them wrong. The oldest city in the state and almost the largest. Worked in Austin for years. People kept asking why I didn't move there. Asked every one of them what are you doing this week end. The answer was always the same. Going to San Antonio. I rest my case. This town knows how to party.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

eyes...thanks for the chuckle!
HI Y'all! I am new to Daves, but have lived in Texas for over 40 years. Transplanted from Colorado, and I got here as fast as I could. I absolutely love Texas and have from the first day here. I can't think of one thing I would change. The folks are absolutely wonderful!

Richland, MI(Zone 5b)

Hello, Caliche! Welcome to DG and to Texas, from an "almost newbie" and two weeks old Texan!
Goofy

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Native Texan here. Only been away about 20 times in my life. I couldn't imagine living anywhere else. After 4-5 days, I'm longing for 'home', whether it's the sub-tropics of Houston/Galveston or the Hill Country. I could never be away.

Welcome all!

Hill Country, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi Goofy...I have lived in El Paso a couple of times, a long time ago, when DH was in the Army. We had a vacation home in Rockport for a few years, but now we are back home smack dab in the middle of Texas.

Hill Country, TX(Zone 8a)

knolan, I get homesick for Texas very quickly. We have lived temporarily lots of places, as I followed DH to his "next" duty station. But this old place has been home for about 35 years. Our 5 kids were raised here, and we have lots of fun memories.

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi Caliche,
We must be neighbors because I live smack dab in the middle of Texas too! I grew up in Midland and then Lubbock for high school and college, and I am really glad to live here where trees grow by accident. We could use a good soaking rain!
Patricia

Hill Country, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi Patricia! Glad to meetcha. I live in Lampasas.....but my dentist is in Goldthwaite, so I go up there occasionally. Its a very pretty drive, even if it is very dry. We do need a rain.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes....rain.....send rain.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Yes Please send rain.. but that's kinda typical here in SE TX.. dry and hot... but there's no place like home.. Was born in Houston.. near the "monkeys" at Herman .. many yrs ago..lol.. now I like the country life.. you young ones can have all the big city life you want..lol
Becky

Missouri City, TX

I'm still thankful for the USAF bringing me to Texas in '64. Lived all over the midwest, but when I got to the San Antonio area, knew I was finally "HOME". DW and I even have a pair of t-shirts with that on them.

Met and married a native SA girl and we return to the Menger every year for our anniversary - that's coming up in a couple of weeks - #39.

My best friend (panhandle born and raised), asks me to explain a bit of Texas history when we are traveling to other parts of our country. Tells the audience that I'm almost more Texan than him.

When the "patch" died in the early '80's spend two years in Denver, and two more in LA, before we could return to Texas. Not leaving the state again - as the bumber sticker says - When you're in Texas, You;re in a WHOLE different Country!

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Bubba...Congrats on the up coming anniversary.... 39.. wow that's something to be proud of!!

Becky
