Hello Texas!

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

On the caladiums...there are some that are Sun Tolerant ...a couple of Whites...White Queen and Aaron...a couple of pinks...Rosebud and Carolyn Wharton...most of the reds are....good luck.

Good morning everyone!

I feel a bit better today. Those dang bugs, many of them, are dead. Live ones, I've never seen during daytime. I have no story to justify my fear of insects. It just happened, and it grew stronger with time. When I was a kid, I've had nothing like this. I have very few that I'm not afraid of (unless they get together and too close to "attack" me): bees, ladybugs, colorful butterflies.
So these ones that drove me insane yesterday: you only see them at night. If you see them during daytime, you see only dead ones. As I said, they are brown, less or about 1/2" and "plump" (almost like a bean). They fly, and if they bang on the window or screen trying to climb towards the light, they make a horrible noise (that doesn't help me either...). They are not moths, they seem to have a hard shiny shell that breaks open when they fly.
Those June bugs, are they good or bad?

The caladiums I saw are here: http://davesgarden.com/products/market/view/1925/ (a mix) and http://davesgarden.com/products/market/view/1926/ (one kind only, but hardy to zone 9). I don't think I'll have time for walks while in Miami, I have to go work and talk with my boss. But if I do, can I take plants on a plane? In the checked-in luggage? I will fly, not drive, and by myself. Hubby stays here. I would order some of those caladiums, if they fit to my zone and they wait for me to come back. For that shadowy "canvas area"! Do you think I should D-mail her to see if she can accommodate me with some hardier Caladiums and after August 1st?

I'm waiting for my hubby to get home, so we can go do some shopping...

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Bill is a he...and caladiums will be fine even if ya pot them before ya go, and keep them inside or outside..your choice...If your bulbs are packaged good, just put them in your suitcase and you should be fine...listen kiddo, it's getting late in the season for CB's so the sooner the better in getting them..

Richland, MI(Zone 5b)

OOPS!
I cannot pot them before, cause I'm leaving Tuesday morning, and coming back on 30th. I'll write him. So if I have plants in my luggage I don't get arrested?

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Nope, not if their packaged properly as to what they are...now if it was Brugs or Dats....I might be a little concerned...

goofy....
The June bug or May bug is the Phyllophaga genus...no pics in bug files yet. I need to add one for them maybe. They are not one of my protected bugs! I make sure they are dead. The larva form is the "grub worm" that eats the roots of plants and grasses. Chafer grubs feed below ground for 3-4 years before changing into May beetles or June bugs. When they land on their backs they can't get up very easy and that is when I squish'em. And I find the larvae as I garden, I will put them in the birdbath and it doesn't take long for a robin or bluejay to pounce on them.

well gee that just proves even more why I keep telling DH we need a bird bath in the yard!!!
y'all keep posting logical reasons as to why to have things and I might just get the stuff I am dreamin about LOL

Richland, MI(Zone 5b)

Thank you everybody!
Thanks, Sheila for the info. How long do they fly around? Do they ever disappear? How to seriously get rid of them? Probably there's a bad case of them around here, they are so many! That night in 10 minutes, at least 10 attacked me. Last evening I stayed inside the screened patio, with the light off (all the light I got came from the kitchen window - that shines light in the patio but away from the patio door - and from the bathroom - lights outside the patio door) and I still heard them bumping, and two still sneaked inside (DH killed them). In the morning here were many dead ones that DH got rid of before I showed up with my morning coffee.

On a happier note:
Quick, Sheila, find a reason for Phyllis to get a pond as well!!!

Hugs,
Alexandra

She has very sad frogs, they would be so happy if she had a pond! Plus I can share EE, Lizard Tail, a Water lily, and loads of Pickrel plants with you Phyllis!

Midway, TX(Zone 8b)

Alex here is a link that shows the Texas June Bugs and info about them.

We have always had an outside yard light. After one summer the June bugs were so plentiful and such a nuisance I had the yard light disconnected. When most of them finally died the smell and mess was awful!!!!!!!!!!! Peewwwwwwwwww! We just use a flashlight if we need to go outside now. We live in the country so we are not afraid of our darkened yard.

See, I knew Sheila had tons to share. :) I do too. A lot of my pond plants came from Sheila, but I have a few other things too.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL!

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

maybe if I drop the wanting a swimming pool he'll go for a small pond LOL...but the pool would be so nice to cool off in LOL

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

I'd opt for a cold shower and a pond if I were you.....you can always turn the hose on yourself....

last pic and need some advise here too on this I am new to it LOL

I told him he didn't have to dig it now it was just a thought but he replied yeah well we know ho w you girls are and your talking he'd never hear the end of it till he did ...hahahah then he laughed

We have some rubber roofing a friend gave us that works for some guy over by Denton that we have opened up and been using to try and starve out the bamboo roots that are still around but he is thinking we can use that for the "liner"...turning over so the white side is up plus it is thick so bamboo roots can't get through it hopefully LOL

have to go move my car to the shade so I can wash the outside yet but needs to be cool ....did anyone else get the lil shower we had this afternoon???? the best way to make it rain is clean your car LMAO

Richland, MI(Zone 5b)

Yessss, Phyllis! Congratulations (so I was good at sending pond vibes to your hubby, and Sheila was great at giving reasons)!!!!!
Lin, I am not afraid to get out in my backyard (well, I am a bit, because of possible critters), but evenings I have time to spend with my DH, and I like to see a bit of his face, and stay outside as well... Now we stay on the patio, with no lights in, but with light coming from other windows towards the backyard. It is much better! At least it's not a massive invasion.
Hugs everyone!

Goofy...The May or June bugs will be gone in a few weeks. Of course there are always moths, but you kind of know where they are flying lol!

Phyllis....That is super, hope that is where you wanted it! LOL!! As for the liner, we use 45 mil liner, but if bamboo shoots won't penetrate whatever you have I am sure it will work. If you have some old carpet, I would put it down against the wood and dirt if it is rocky, before you lay your liner. If you plan on having fish it must be 24" of water depth so they don't freeze. Or you can take them inside in an aquarium for the winter months that it freezes. Don't forget a shelf for shallow depth plants too.
Woohoo!!, Mibus2 has a pond in progress!!!!

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

got the shelfs for plants and as for fish not sure on that yet am thinking not pushing it yet LOL

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

That is best, it is a pain until you get the water good bacteria balanced and the pond life starts to really come. Maybe fish in the Spring. TARogers could trade you a few for starts I bet. He has a nice pond.
I just got my son and a friend to move large rocks and rework our pond. I used the large flagstone for the water fall shelves this time and it made a nice flow.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Ted has a georgeous pond....and he did it all by himself...he's difinitely your go to man on this one!!

With your husband's approval, girl!
Sheila: good news that they'll be gone, but they'll come back next year? Moths are better, and don't fly in herds!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, they usually do. You might check into a grub bait at the garden store.

Richland, MI(Zone 5b)

Thanks, Sheila.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

thanks for all the good vibes and thoughts girls......it's a no go......with pricing pumps, filters and liners he will not go for the cost to do it right the first time..... so am fill in the hole in and forgetting it and leaving it at that.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Awe.... :-((
If I have extra pond stuff after checking my pumps I will bring them to Jacksonville in Oct.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey, Phyllis. Just wanted to suggest that you might want to leave that hole, instead of filling it in. You really can build a pond for almost nothing, if you take your time and shop around. Digging the hole is the hardest part (IMHO). If I were you, I would just leave it, and consider that the first installment.

Couple of suggestions. One is that there's no rush. You know what, I'm growing lotus this year, and they get big, and there's no room for them in my tiny little pond. So I'm just growing them in "mini-ponds"--big flower pots without holes. All I have to do is throw in a plant tab and half a mosquito dunk once a month, and keep the water topped off. They're so pretty and we've enjoyed them almost as much as the pond. My point here is that you don't have to have a pump and filter and all that stuff right away. You do have to have a liner, to make that hole into a pot. But that's really all you need to have a water garden. You can't add fish to it like that, but there's still all kinds of pretty things you can grow in it. You can add the other "parts" when you're ready for them.

So, first you need a liner. Didn't you say you already have roofing liner? If you don't, it's pretty cheap. It's not meant to be exposed to the elements, so I hear it's not a good permanent solution. But hey, I don't know if that matters. Most people redo their ponds after a couple of years anyway (usually to make them bigger--she says as she raises her hand).

Eventually you will want fish. (I didn't, but my plumber talked me into mine, and I was glad he did.) THEN you'll need a pump and filter. But you can add those things as the budget allows. You can also do things like build veggie filters, which cost less than $10. I ended up buying a combo pump/filter, because I have cascade ponds and needed a fairly big pump that would support them. I think it was $120 for a 350 gph pump/filter. If you don't have cascades or waterfalls, it would be less. I took 9 months to finish my pond while I shopped around. So... save your loose change for a year and then you'll have most of it. Hey, that's how I'm buying my greenhouse. :)

I guess what I'm saying is, there's NO WAY I'd fill in a hole that's already dug. I'd start small, but I'd USE that hole. Find some kind of liner, and grow pretty things! And then add the other stuff as you're ready.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Thanks for the ideas and suggestions...I knew it was too good to be true that he would say yes and dig a hole.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

You can use it for a bog garden even!
