This is about 2" long and about 1/2"W . It is very hard to the touch. It's on the back of an oak chair that was sitting on the porch for about a year. Does anyone have any idea what is in it?
CLOSED: Hard casing found on a chair that was sitting outside
Looks like praying mantis egg case.
thanks. That would be cool.
Anyone else have an idea.
It is a mantis egg case for sure
Should this be in the sun or shade? We don't know what to do with it. It was found on the front porch and I'd rather not leave it right there.
I would move it to a shady place. You might like to keep it in a jar with a gauze lid for ventilation and watch for the emergence of the baby mantis. I did this successfully with an Australian mantis egg-case (ootheca), see this article: http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/252/
