Does anyone know an easy way to propagate a heartleaf ice plant ( baby sunrose, dew plant)?
I'd like to make another hanging pot from the one I have now.
Thanks
propagating baby sunrose (heartleaf ice plant)
Hi ejennings, I have taken four to five inch cuttings and rooted them in water. I cut off any leaves that may be under water. Roots should appear in a few days. Once they have lots of roots plant them in potting soil keeping the soil damp until they start growing, then water as needed. I have also rooted them in potting soil. I have better luck with rooting them in water. You could try both ways to see which works for you. I have two hanging plants but I call them 'Heart and Flowers'. Have know idea what they "really" are. Don't really care, I like them no matter what they're called! Good luck.
I do better rooting in water also. Thanks-when the babies are in bed I can play in soil.:)
I'm a novice really but have propogated dozens of ice plants. I rooted them in water all last fall, but more recently I've just stuck the cuttings directly in my "dirt," which is a mixture of regular potting soil (Expert from Wal-Mart) and lots of vermiculite and perlite. When I rooted in water it took a couple of weeks to see roots. In the soil, I'd guess a little less. My cuttings are stubby things, and I don't trim them down too much.. I haven't needed rooting hormone. They're in 4-inch-square pots on my deck, and I keep them moist. I check for roots by tipping the whole cutting and soil glob out of the pot and looking. When they have roots, I "promote" them to slightly bigger pots, with slightly heavier soil mix, and water them somewhat less. Or if the they go directly into the garden.
Propogating ice plants is what first made me feel like a gardener!
I happen to have a few 4" pots-If I can get off computer early enough, i want to try and get my new plant started:) Thanks
