June Blooms Page 2

Those are a couple of pretty plants LindaTX8! It is amazing how intense the colors become with the heat of summer.

Bronc, how much sun does your frogfruit get? I love the contrast of the winged loosestrife and the other large leaves.
Linda, that Eryngo is very striking. Is it a native?

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

That one, Eryngo Leavenworthii, is a native. http://www.sbs.utexas.edu/bio406d/images/pics/api/eryngium_leavenworthii.htm

Anna, my Frogfruit is in full sun in a mulched bed.

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

TJ, my Frogfruit did the same. Most plants, when first planted, just sit there and don't do anything for a few weeks. The Frogfruit says "YEAH BABY!" and immediately takes off. Mine is planted in the walkway along the back of my house, directly under the eaves. They get late day full-west-facing sunshine. Like you, I wanted a plant that would hold down the mulch. And I also wanted something that I could walk on. So far I am very pleased. This photo was taken in May; the FF is easily twice that big in size now. When I have to start fighting it back, I'll probably be singing a different tune! :-)

Hmmm...I'm liking Frogfruit more and more! I'll have to put it on my list!

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

You'll love it, Stephanie. And it's a host plant to the (if memory serves) Phaon Crescent butterfly.

Seeing as how we have thousands of each, I would agree with Carla. Ours are wild, and in tall company, can reach 4 feet tall.

broncbuster, thank you for the ID on the flame acanthus, I am enjoying all the beautiful pictures.

I'm jealous of the blackberry lily! I've got one that I just relocated earlier this spring, but it's not doing anything but getting bigger! LOL Maybe next year I'll see some flowers out of it.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Stephanie, keep watching. Mamajack brought some seedlings last fall to the Arlington RU. I just noticed yesterday that mine has a new bud on it.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

I put my BB lilies in ground this year (from pots) no buds yet so thanks for sharing the blooms! I got some purple candy lilies starting and can't wait for them to bloom. I like the Lochroma ~ new to me, I need to check it out!

The one I transplanted barely survived the winter, so I'm not surprised that it's not blooming, but it's really growing! I also have some seeds I need to get going. Maybe next year I'll see buds!!

podster, I have a bud on my white Texas Star Hibiscus that you gave to me, maybe next week I can show a bloom .

Placenciarita ~ I look forward to seeing the bloom. That is the white one? I have four small plants but no buds yet. My red is in bloom...

I love the composition on your spider lily and passion vine photos! Nice... Do you know what DdeTxs' bloom is? Very pretty...

I had missed a flush of rain lily blooms while on vacation. This morning, I have seed pods AND new blooms...

No matter which way I went I couldn't get the best light of this wildflower standing cypress. A gift from Mitch as he moved to Oklahoma.

Very conflicted gardner. If I have space whatever my current love is, I just plop it down. I have crepe myrtle and banana tree growing intertwined. Same bed has fern, EE, castor bean, datura, duranta, fern, three kinds of ginger, Texas hibiscus, purple curley basil, verbena, china doll, papaya, red hot poker and I don't know what else. Sorry that I never know the proper names of anything. If it is pretty (and aren't they all) I plant and try to take care of it. Oh, and brugs.

Heavenly, LouC! I'm so happy you posted that photo of standing cypress. A few people have mentioned it lately and couldn't for the life of me think of what it looked like...very nice. Do hummers like it too? Or am I thinking of the vine?

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Cocoa, the hummers do like it. I have seen hummers on it up in Oklahoma. Do you have sandy loam type dirt? If so you should be able to grow it much easier than us black clay folks. It just does not seem to take well to our dirt, but it grows wild in sandy loam.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Lynnea, there have been more hummers in our yard this year than ever before. Although the above pictures don't show it, there are many blooming flowers. They seem to particularly like the white crepe myrtle. I have every color bloom and they seem not to be particular. Had always been told they went after red. There is lots of red. Have a large bed of turk's cap that is just now blooming and that has always been a draw for the hummers.

The standing cypress was about 3-4 inches tall when Mitch gave it to me. He warned not to pet it too much, ie. fertilizer, mulch, water, or it would die. It is now about 36". I will watch it and if I can will save seed. I really don't know how he started the plant, seed or division. This one has a couple of tiny pups so far.

Sweezel, I'm envious of that black clay. Once it's broken up and amended there is nothing finer! I can find sandy loam. lol We have about four distinctly different soils in just one yard. Everything from pure sand to a neon yellow slimy clay. It's why I'm always begging and annoying people for plant/soil details...Trying to find that perfect square foot of soil.lol

LouC, I've noticed that with the hummers too. I don't have any red in my garden and plenty of hummers. Well, I didn't have red...Sweezel forced a bunch of red salvia on me at the RU.lol She'll say I snatched them out of hands going "Ooooo, salvias"! But that's not how it happened ;0)
I'm thinking it was standing cypress that a friend of mine said she was going to drop off. She's my Mitch.lol Always leaving me goodies on my doorstep :0)

Is Mitch doing well? Please tell him we all say "hi".

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

He is in school and also on the staff of a church. I think he has little time to catch his breathe. I hope when he is settled someday to be able to divide and return many of the beautiful plants he has given to my garden for his own garden. Don't think I have lost any of them...yet.

I hope so, too!
