CLOSED: gnats and tons of them in house plants

Please let me know how to get rid of houseplant gnats. They supposedly live only 5 days but love to leave lots and lots of babies behind. I've tried the potato method, store bought insect spray, not overwatering etc. My co-worker is being run out of the office. I finally took all his plants home to see if I could save them. I'm leaving them outside to dry out. I don't want them near my plants.

The gnats are black flies. The worms feed on decaying plant matter and roots of your plants. They can destroy seedlings. The best way to treat them is place yellow sticky cards for fruit flies on stakes in your pots and then water them repeatedly with Malathion. The directions are on the bottle for different types of plants. Beware it stinks but it works!
