Horned Grebes nesting.

Anchorage, AK(Zone 4a)

This evening I found a pair of Red-necked Grebes with four newly hatched chicks. The chicks ride on the parents back, and hide under the wings. A chick is peaking out from under the wing, in this shot.

At one point the parent had enough of the chicks bouncing around, and flipped them into the water.

Gary, that is the first time I've ever seen what a Weasel really looks like. Pretty sneaky looking, if you ask me! Thanks for sharing this great adventure of the Grebes with us. Excellent photos, as always.

I returned to the pond with the Red-necked Grebes this evening. The adults were feeding the chicks on the far side of the pond as usual. I sat down for a while, and watched the adults feeding the chicks. To my surprise, they swam across the pond, and started feeding directly in front of me. I got a few good close ups.

On the 1 st. there were 4 chicks. Today there were only three chicks. They have lost one in the last three days.

I don't know what the green grubs were. But, the adults were bring a lot of them up, from the bottom of the pond, to feed the chicks.
