I just got a Calla Lilly from a friend. I have no experience with lillies of any kind. All of the yellow blooms are gone now. It looks like it might need repotting. Should I repot it or put it in the ground ??
Calla Lilly Care
Okay - I got it guys CALLA's are not really lillies. Sorry! But all of your pictures are beautiful!!
LOL Did you try the Bulbs forum? You might die waiting for calla advice from us! Hang around awhile, we'll have you hooked on lilies too. :)
Glad to have you here at Dave's.
I use Calla Lillies as water plants Paul
It is so hot and humid here I'm afraid put them outside since they have been indoors!!
Callas do fine outside, tcinmb. If I can grow them in our heat I know you can! Mine come back every year.
I think that they were given as a hospital plant and have never been OUTDOORS. Probably from the nursery to the florist to the hospital to me. I did re pot it. Oh to put it in this heat and humidity could result in instant death. My loquat is fried!!
My calla grow but don't bloom :(
The folliage is beautiful isn't it? But to have blooms aah!
I don't have any experience with your heat and humidity, Iowa has it's h&h which I am sure is nothing close to yours, but if you do decide to give it some outdoor time I would choose a shady area and only an hour or two the first few days. Gradually increasing time out and then light exposure. They are supposed to love heat and humidity once acclimated.
Thanks. I'll try it today!!
tcinmb~~
howdy,
Las Vegas here again. I would in the meanwhile cool the bulbs when they are done blooming by putting them in peat moss til fall,in a cool DRY local. After they bloomed, let the leaves get some light for a few weeks to 6. This should recharge the bulbs a bit. You will wanna add some slow release bulb food to the ground after planting in the spring. The eWinter, keep them in the cool dry area, lotsa folks use a ventilated produce bag, BUT keep themaway from apples, i forget the tech, but i know that can be bad for bulbs...its a gas the apples release?
anyhow as soon as its about freezing (if it does that this upcoming winter, plant them where they egt lotsa early AM sun, letting the tops stay dry- no damp!! Bottoms too, watch for too much waer for rot, i lost two this sprin to rot on the bulbs :( Steve has got it right all the way, if we can grow them you are a shoe in. Be gradual is all. Bluegrass Mom, try bulb food, or little less water? Also, you can remember cool feet warm tops, works for callas too, like real lilies.
There are Bulb foods to apply throughout the seasin before they bloom, with a high Potassium count and again, slow realease is best. Correct me if I am wrong, anyone but this works for me...
peace,

Hi, Darren
Do they do their best in Full Sun? Maybe I should move mine to a pot. They are nice and large but in dappled shade.
Teresa
Mine would have except full sun here, at the time they were blooming would have been TOO much full sun, its a crazy balance. I get my best flowers before the trees finish leafing(leaving?) out...i know that sounds absurd but its true, with at least a third or more of my flowering plants; problem is, i do nopt like what grows naturally in my area, its a lot more work sceduling it all. I am getting my july blooming Lilies up anr budded now, as july would bake them, lol. My columbine has already seeded, for example! Little more sun might not hurt at all in temps that are not TOO high for sure~but, i Would wait til fall to move them unless there is no growth now at all tho'...
:D
Fernman--I've got mine in a pot. A larger one anyway. It's drouping - I was going to introduce it to the outside today but was going to be away for 9 hours. So nixed that idea.So should I put in on the back porch (which is shaded) to start??
I f this makes sense, lol, its like breaking in a pair of new leather shoes. A few hours a t a time for the first few days watching for any weather wierdness, mind, and then a halfday, then a whole day, if it is drooping the roots off the bulbs may not be getting even water. is it a clay pot? if so soak it, the pot and all, for an hour or two. if plastic, I would water it and then give it a lot of sun but in the coolest temp area possible. I hope this makes sense~what are the high temps in SC right now ?
