Interest Poll to repeat HOUSTON AREA PLANT SWAP -JULY19or26

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

Christi, Sorry you have to have that done. Had something similar twice about 30 yrs ago so I was a lot younger than I am now. And you do feel a lot better quickly. It was not so painful that I wouldn't do it again. This time the hip is used up and I'm told by those who have had the operation that it can be painful. I'm so old it's a shame to put new parts in me but I guess I wore out the old one so what can you do? We need to have a real roaring party w/all the time I've wasted planning to go to RU's and never making one in the past 2 years.. You get yourself well and we'll celebrate big-time. I've got a 53rd wedding anniversary coming up in Sept. so around then would be a really great time to put stuff together for a wing-ding.

Ann

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Not all that much behind you, Ann. In June we were married 47 years. Sure couldn't manage all of this without Mike. Whoops! Did it again OT.

Missouri City, TX

OT is OK. Who says marriages don't last - we are a bit further behind y'all, but had a wonderful 39th in San Antonio a week ago.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Why Bubba,. your that old? lol...Happy anniversary.

I have a question for ya'll- The whole swapee attendance. Wayne and I were talking about doing a short 30 min or so, informal workshop that day after the zone9 tour. We're throwing around different subjects, and which of these is important to the majority of gardeners that will be at the swap. Realizing that we could talk all day about such things, keep in mind we want to keep the informal workshop something fun, and not too long about 30 min.
Right now leading the list in subjects is 3 different Gardeners talking about their propagation techniques, what is more successful, what is not.
Other subjects were - successful pest control.

Any feed back ? subjects....? Does this sound interesting? Stick to swapping and socializing?

Rj

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh, yes, propagation techniques would be wonderful! None of my attempts have been very successful so far.

Missouri City, TX

Pest control is a good idea.

How 'bout planting medium - some like soilless, some like MG, others of us are trying to be organic, and work with our native soil - amended of course, but with what?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Okay ...very good...these are at the top of my list too.
As a matter of fact, I will show you my set up in the back on how I make my own Planting medium for potted plants.
I figured we were getting gouged on all these foofy super enriched premium and lovely titled bags of non dirt - so I started making my own stuff. Realizing the wheel barrow wasn't cutting it - for getting it mixed up well, and the time it takes mixing it up, I went searching for some way I could do this quicker ..of course ...making sure I didn't get gouged, buying a device to make my anti-gouged planting medium. I ended up buying one of those large mulchers that has a handle on the end so you can turn the mulch. I prefer the old fashioned large rectangle space to mulch. Anyway my eyes lit up thinking...how ideal to make potting soil. Most gardeners I've talked to say the mulchers don't work well..so..I went looking for a used one...100 bucks....4 turns...lovely mixed potting medium of evenly mixed ingredients of your choice!
Anyway....I also have rather lengthy blog on all of that with several members recipes for standard planting mediums...if your interested..let me know.!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I personally have printed out 24 pages called "Randy's Dirt". It has become my dirt bible. Check it out!

Christi

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

i would love the 3 different Gardeners talking about their propagation techniques, what is more successful, what is not.

thanks

Randy,
What? No visit to Penzey's Spice Shop???!!! That was a blast, and a great treat outside of the plants and people. Please consider introducing this little treasure to the new masses.

Linda

P.S. I need more spices...

Missouri City, TX

You just gotta come - gg!!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

oh yes...the afternoon open for personel field trips...Penzeys...20th street...second hand shops..
I love Penzeys too...I also need more spices....

Missouri City, TX

I should bring some of our "Es Bueno" seasoning, too, so y'all can try it. Over 70 ingredients - 5 whole citrus, lots of different garlics and peppers, but less than 5% salt.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Need everyone to please list name and number in party on this attendance thread..

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I feel so out of the loop! LOL. My computer has been iffy the last few weeks and a lot of my threads got 'unwatched'. My apologies.

I've also been iffy if I was actually going to be able to come....a possible family vacation was in the works but has since been pushed forward. I'm on. Janet and Connie......please dmail me if you'd like to stay here. My guest room is open and we can extend the stay for other travels if you wish. We aren't stuffy here and there's no bedtime. LOL.

Linda....I'd be happy to host a group to go back to Penzey's. It's such a great place and I can take ya'll to a wonderful nursery or two afterwards.....Joshua's, Buchanan's, Another Place in Time. I know that Lucia's Garden was really looking forward to seeing us last year but we tried to cram too much in in too little time. If we did go there, it would be Penzey's and Lucia's....probably nothing else. Here's the website: http://www.luciasgarden.com/ If there's enough interest, I'll contact her and let her know we're coming. I don't want to contact her unless we're for sure coming as I think I disappointed her last year and don;t want to do that again.

I'm all for propagation and soil presentations. Sounds good to me.

I said I would bring potato salad and baked beans. Should I stick to that combination or go with a little more or less? Is anyone else bringing sides or am I feeding an army? No problem either way. I'm good to go.

It's going to be a little hot for me so I may be inside most of the time but I'm looking forward to meeting all and bringing some goodies to share.

Randy....I'm close enough to help so let me know if you need it.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Ann - I remember you going through the surgery last year and I'm really disappointed that we won't meet again! I spoke with your family via email and they were all wonderful. There willo be another time for sure.

Lou...haven't spoken much to you but prayers to you and I'm sure we'll meet as well. Looking forward to it.

Crowelli - can you please pack me in your suitcase? I'd love a trip to Iceland....I'm an old Carlson and have northern blood. I'll go in a second. I have been meaning to dmail you.

Bubba - Happy LATE ANNIVERSARY...and please tell Linda too! Give her a hug! yes, please bring Es Bueno. I'll think of something funky in return.

Am I getting these threads mixed up? I think so. I read a little here, a little there and comment on what I can when I remember it. Ya'll have just talked so much!

OK....I'll get my trade list in order tomorrow. Promise. I wish I had more but i didn't start early enough.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

whaaaaaa. I want to come. boooohooooo

Christi

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Kristi, Thank you for the offer. I will talk to Connie today and see what she wants to do. I got 6 rum runner hibiscus started the other day. Not sure if they will be "truly rooted" by the time we get there, but I'm trying. We've got a trip to San Antonio this coming weekend. Hopefully my daughter will keep things watered for me. Plants aren't a priority for her though. So we shall see.

Maybe God will help out and give us some rain. Had some during the night. I woke up just in time to see a "promise" in the sky. Within 2 minutes it was gone. Talk about timing! :-) Unfortunately, my brain wasn't awake enough to get out the camera.

Janet

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

We've been lucky, it rained yesterday and is raining now too. Have the rain barrells catching the water.
Kristi, I may take you up on the offer- friday before the swap...

I haven't seen that lucias garden before. Have you been to the backyard gardener yet Kristi? He has some nice water features, and sells alot of water plants too.

Wayne is also putting together a reduced price list for swappers only for those that may be interested.

I think Beans and Potato salad are just right. I don't think there will be as many folks this year- although seems like 20 percent of the folks last year decided at the last minute - oh why not..and showed up.

Missouri City, TX

Slightly off-thread - but:

The Chronicle is having a "Ultimate Houston Winery" poll.

And since so many of you liked the Circle S Vineyards wine we had last year, why not give them a vote?

Cast your vote here:
http://www.chron.com/entertainment/dining/

Remember we will be bringing a couple or so, and would be willing to play "delivery service" if anyone wants to place an order.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Janet, Put some plastic grocery sacs around cuttings while you are gone to help hold in the moisture.

I voted bubba

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Good idea Sandy! Thanks! We had wonderful rain today. So I've got the evening off from my watering chores. I'm loving' it!

Wharton, TX(Zone 9a)

I voted for you too bubba...and I see you are way ahead with 67% of the vote!!!!

Dallas, TX

I want to come too ... :(

Beaumont, TX(Zone 9a)

I was really looking forward to this event, especially being so close to home. Unfortunately I injured my hip and have been out of work for 3 weeks. I am having back surgery on the 21st of this month. The doctor tells me it will be a minimum of 3 month recovery if all goes well. So I'm looking at no income for at least five months. The surgery doesn't concern me so much as how I will make it financially. Please keep me in your prayers and I know the Lord will bless.

Thanks Jay

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I'm so sorry, Jay. We will be praying for you!

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

We'll miss meetig you Jay....hopefully next year. You're in our hearts and prayers.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Do we have an epidemic of back surgery? I am dreading mine on the 31st. 3-4 months of recovery.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Randy - haven't been to the backyard gardener. Where's he located? I may go and check it out next week. I'm in the market for a small water feature.

Beans and potato salad it is. Hopefully, Gymgirl will bring those wonderful greens....hint, hint.

I'll be bringing a bottle or two of vino.....and perhaps some fruit and cheese.

Janet - DH says if ya'll come he'll do some mean grilling. There's a wonderful nursery out this way that you guys might want to visit. Feel free to stay both days, if ya'll wish. And don't worry if you don't.....ya'll are just so nice and I can;t wait to show you where I put the praying mantis.

Hi Kristi,

I appreciate your thoughtfulness so much. And your DH is such a sweetie for offering to grill us up some mean grub. I told Connie yesterday about your generous offer. She said, now remember that Debbie might be going with us. Connie was telling a friend about our plans to go to Houston and the gal invited herself to go along with us. (which really isn't a problem) I've never met this gal, but Connie has known her for many years and always speaks of her with much fondness, so I feel like I do know her. Debbie has shared plants with Connie several times over the years. Anyhow, Connie's supposed to check with her to see for sure if she's going. We'll let you know for sure as soon as we know.

This morning, I'm heading out to San Antonio for the weekend. I'll be back Sunday, so hopefully we'll know then.

The praying mantis looks great there! I bet he gives a fright to the unsuspecting folks that pass through that doorway. HAHAHAHA

Thanks again!

Talk to you folks soon,
Janet

East of Nacogdoches, TX(Zone 8a)

This sounds like a tremendous RU! I can't make it, but I'll be interested in what all ya'll end up doing. Have a blast.!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Kristi (Knolan)

Were you at Zone9 last week? Wayne said he thought you were there picking up some plants.
I can't remember the address of backyardgardener....but it's in go gardening.
You know that crazy 5 way interesection on studewood? it's past my street, anyway it's a sharp angle right.

I went to Caldwells Nursery last night and hung out with Chuck and Caydee for a while, it's really looking beautiful there. She said if anyone is looking for peppers she has a few different kinds. I had to just so no and not get anything...and there was some tantalizing things. I've never seen so much bamboo before, but actually found one that I really liked..now if I can remember the name of it..

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Yup, Randy.....that was me! I got more than I needed. LOL.

You should have swung by since you were out this way. Love going out there. Went last Saturday but they were closed (after the 4th). Let me know if you think of the name and want it....I'm probably making a trip this week. I'm in search of a blue mist flower and am not finding it anywhere!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

well let me know when your going...I need to pick up some plants she's donating to the swap...I'm always over there early evening and night..so I miss seeing alot of things during the day

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Do you want to go with or do you want me to pick things up for you? I'm flexible except for Wednesday and possibly Friday.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I want to go with...
I can go in the mornings..

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

plus...you know Wayne is putting together a sales list at Zone9 for swap folks..
he probably gave you those prices anyway last week...can't beat some of his deals!

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Wayne had excellent prices and beautiful plants. Everyone.....save your money!

Just let me know when you want to go.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Thursday? in the A.M.?

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

That works for me!
