CLOSED: Interesting Caterpllar

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Any thoughts on this one? I found him this morning on the lawn furniture when I went to mow. Very definite stripes on his head.

Thanks in advance,
Juanita

This appears to be a saddled prominent (sometimes also called the maple prominent); Heterocampa guttivitta (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae) - see http://www.forestryimages.org/browse/detail.cfm?imgnum=3717020

Yep, that looks like it! Thanks.

Please, can someone identify this caterpillar? I found it on my Knockout rose today. It is about 2 1/4" long. It looks like it could do damage to my bush. In fact it is still steadily eating the rose leaves in the jar. EEEeekk!

I suspect that this is a larva of the eastern buck moth, Hemileuca maia (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae). See http://www.discoverlife.org/mp/20q?search=Hemileuca+maia and http://www.afpmb.org/pubs/Field_Guide/Images/originals/Fig.%20151.jpg for representative images. Their body color is highly variable, but the shape and position of the spines are characteristic. The spines, BTW, are venomous; this caterpillar should not be handled if at all possible.
