This is wild!

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Now I have seen the typically viruses on passionflowers. You know, it causes some yellow splotches on the leaves, but this is wild. I am assuming that this is a virus since variegated passionflowers like this do not exist. The entire vine (and it is isolated) is variegated white and green. Anyone knows what kind of virus causes white variegation? The vine is quite healthy and growing like crazy. It is actually very beautiful.

Awesome variegation. I hope you can keep it going.

What makes you think it's a virus? Couldn't this be a mutation?

Martin

Could be a mutation. I was just assuming that it was a virus. It would be really cool if it was a mutation. I could take cuttings and grow variegated passies. Whatever it is, it is an awesome looking vine.

What variety of Passiflora is it?

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Good old common Incarnata.

Incarnata?
This looks like a true variegation.
You may be on to something here.
Take a few cuttings and grow them out alongside your main plant. If, after at least a full year, the variegation continues, the plant blooms and it maintains it's health - call the National Geographic. You have something new and exciting.
:-)
Just kidding - get in touch with the IPS, show them your photos, but hang on to your plant. Don't give any away without making sure of what you have. If it is the real deal - register it.
Good luck! :-)

Thanks. Done. Lets see if they respond.

Some variegations started because of a virus as well as mutations. I'm no experts on passiflora's, just the one in my yard :-p, but I agree that this looks to have real potential for a new variety of vine. I'm not good with cuttings (of any kind) but i have had 100 % success with layering it. You might consider that as well, you'll get less plants than with cutting but maybe more new plants will take?? Boy if you do get new variegated plants from this.... I would like one! Will trade lots!

I might try that and see if the new plant will hold it variegation or revert back to the original plant. I have incarnata growing all over my back yard and this one just popped up not far from one of the mother plants. The other incarnatas dont seem affected. If it is a virus, it certainly isnt making it sick. It is growing as rapidly as the others.

Sweet! are you already thinking about names for it???? I would be!

Variegated P. incarnata...SWEET!!!
I'm bookmarking this one.

That's absolutely fantastic! I agree, looks like true variegation to me, too.

Thats No Virus Paul

Lisa, here is an excellent article on possible causes of variegation in foliage:

I just went out and took a picture of my young Passiflora coccinea, which has variegation in the leaves - a horticulturalist has identified it as a virus:

Here is another picture of my virus-laden Passiflora coccinea - the mature leaves are mottled, but the new leaves are solid green.

Rylaff did you grow that from seeds ? Paul

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Wow that is amazing rylaff!! I will also be watching this thread.

Notice the virus is yellow. The variegation in question is white and the plant healthy.

Campobello, SC(Zone 7a)

I just got a x alato-caerulea and the leaves look similar to KayJones's coccinea. Is this a virus too? And if so, are my other passi's at risk now?

http://www.microbiologybytes.com/virology/Plant.html

This site addresses the question of plants spreading a virus - well worth reading. It explains the difference between animal viruses and plant viruses.

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

It is hard to say whether this came from seed or not. I have them popping up in several spots not far from the mothr plant. But this is the only one that is variegated. I have grown p. incense and know what the typicaly p. virus looks like. But when I saw this, it looks just like any variegated plant. Per suggestion, I am going to take a leaf off this one, and attempt to infect another vine to see if it is a virus. I am also going to start cuttings to see if it will hold its variegation. If it does, I will name it and we will have an awesome variegated p. incarnata.

Rylaff it is beautiful!!!!!!!
I hope it holds it's variegation for you
How excited you must be!

Here is a little maple tree seedling I found growing along the road yesterday. As you can see, it is variegated. I dug it and planted it in a pot with a lemon tree, hoping that it will continue to grow and show variegation.

I hope this is clear enough for you to see the variegation in this seedling maple tree.
