I've been asked to ID this bug as it is eating and defoliating Rhodos & Linden. It is in USDA 8b off of Vancouver Island, BC.
CLOSED: Leaf eating bug
The caterpillars appear to belong to two different families; Noctuidae (cutworms, etc.) and Geometridae ('loopers'/inchworms, etc.); members of both families are known to feed on rthododendrons and linden. BTW, the rhododendron leaves in the photo appear to exhibit symptoms of disease/physiological disorder such as physiological leaf spot or Phytophthora blight - have you consulted an arborist?
