Hey Molly.....yeah, I thought maybe it could be an inside job too, but the old guy said that he was short 2 helpers that day. The way they have it set up is after the animals are auctioned off, they set the cages in the back with the animals in it. It is kind of closed off, but open all at the same time. They sell all the outside stuff first, then everyone moves inside......then the cages get put outside where the stealing is going on. It pretty much has worked on a trust system in the past and like the case with the roosters that we sold. I didn't realize that the same guy had bought both of our roosters and after the sale we went looking for the buyer......they put the buyer # on the ticket on the cage.....so we went looking for the buyer so we could get our cage back. Unless the buyer or my DH or I had been outside when the thief took the rooster that didn't belong to him, no one else would have said anything. They would have just figured that the person had bought what he was taking.
I think your right Molly, the same person that would steal right there in front of everyone would have no problem doing it right off the back of a truck either. I think the way the auction company is going to handle it is to start checking tickets.....the buyer # on the cage, verses the stubs you get after you pay. The old man was so mad and upset about it, I think he will put someone back where all the sold animals go......allowing people to get their animals when they want to, but not without a ticket. He said they had locked the place down before, and they will have to go back to it. Its just a shame that someone is stealing and it has to be that way!
