This is in the family Geometridae; it bears some resemblance to the brown-shaded gray moth, Iridopsis defectaria - see http://ourfcs.friendscentral.org/moths/images/Iridopsis_FCSRhus-a.jpg
This species has been reported from Texas.
I guess it probably was gray and just being on the dark wood made it look white. I think you hit the nail on the head! Thanks!
