I've started a new Blog (Diary) to track my progress on my redesign efforts. Here's a link to it http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/t/ginnylynn/9267/ . I'll be updating it regularly over the next week.

Work In Progress - Redesign of Gardens
Oh wow, I can't wait to see more! From the looks of your diagram, there's going to be lots of areas to tour when I come to see you ;)
I like the idea of a holding bed and that's now on my to-do list. Looks like we're both going to be busy, busy, busy!!
It's going to be so pretty when your done what you've got to do.....but wait....it's never really done is it!?
Erynne
Yep - lots of little garden "rooms" for you to see. Incentive for you ;-) And you're absolutely right. It will probably never be really done.
I'll try to post some more pics later on - some that show the actual work that I'm doing right now. It's pretty exciting. It's already starting to show the look I was aiming for!
--Ginny
Hey everyone. Some of the interesting stuff is posted now - the progress to date :-)
I'm now "watching" your progress Ginny....I didn't realize we could do that on here. You're such a hard worker and I just know it's going to look awesome! Now where are you going to put some Hostas, lol.
The railroad bed looks soooo filled in now. It seems like yesterday when you started it!
Erynne
What an incredible transformation ginny!! You can really see it taking shape. I'm exhausted just looking at the pics. Keep the pics coming. It's so inspiring!!
Thanks for the feedback :-) I'm nowhere near exhausted but I do have various aches and pains where I had forgotten I had muscles to exercise :-) Since my job entails lots of sitting and a ton of analysis I really enjoy time spent in physical rather than mental labour. It refreshes my soul.
I have just the spot picked out for some hostas - under the small pine tree in the one circular garden. I'll need to be really careful about placement though as the sun hits almost every part of it for at least a little while each day. Some more will go under the red maple, and still more under the Japanese variegated willows in the garden next to the side driveway - once I get all that nasty periwinkle that's taking everything over pulled out!
Not as much progress yesterday (pics later). I went to town to get some decorative stone for the area under the red maple. Got back, laid landscaping fabric, spread the gravel around...oops! Not quite enough. Back to town for 5 more bags. By the time that was finally done rain was threatening so I quickly planted my little pine tree pruned to look like puffballs in the centre of the circular garden next to the shed.
Rain forecast for today again and it looks like it wants to. Should be a perfect day to plant up those 2 round gardens I think.
Well you know, overcast skies are the perfect time to get planting done! I can't work in bright sunshine or windy conditions because I'm picky, lol. I admit to having gardened in light rain and it's not that bad if it's on the warm side.
More updates were posted last night. I probably won't get a chance to do any more until the weekend now that I'm back to work.
Wow this is coming together fast ginnylynn. I luv Overview Shot 5 of 5. It looks like a big staked dahlia garden just waiting to happen ^_^
I had your blog on watch but it didn't alert me! What's up with that?
Ginny, you're a gungho gardener! Holy, where's your off button woman? I feel so inadequate, sniff sniff. :o)
It's really taking shape and there are so many cuuuuurrrrves! What are your paths going to be made of? Are you leaving any grass for hubby to mow? You know how men like a just a little grass don't you!
Aww, and those wittle Hosta babies with my name....well don't I feel special! The ones you sent me are doing well but I'm going to put them right near the deck so they only get morning sun , they will be more protected and of course I can keep a close eye on them. I'm worried about having these youngsters out in the open just now and don't want anything to happen to them. They are soooo gold!
Have you had the rains and t-storms out there?? Surely you must've had the wretched heat? If you were toiling in that, you deserve a medal.
You know, I have a clump of flax too and I had to go to the plant ID forum to figure out what it was. Almost gave it the heave ho because I initially thought it was some floppy weed until I saw last years growth of course. Still deciding where to move it to.
Erynne
Overview shot 5 of 5 does look like a dahlia garden waiting to happen now that you mention it, but the dahlias are waiting to happen in the barrels next to the shed - see the stakes poking up out of them? http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/i/48676/
I don't know why the blog didn't alert you Erynne. If it happens again I'll notify the admins and see what's up. Ohhh...wait a minute! I think I changed the title after you had it on watch. I wonder if that confused it?
Don't feel inadequate now. When I have a goal in view I have no off switch - just ask my hubby - he'll tell you I'm like a dog with a bone! So some would view this trait as a definite liability rather than an asset.
The paths are going to be simple chips and dust to supply a nice, firm (cheap) surface, and yes - I am leaving 3 small grassy areas for DH to mow. Heaven forbid I should take away the reason for his biannual fancy new lawn mower :-)
I'm glad you're pleased with "Erin's Erynne". And just so you know - these little babies have never been planted in the gardens, had a garden tool touch them, or been handled after handling any other hosta I have. So if anything I have ever shows signs of the HVX virus you shouldn't get it in your gardens from the babies.
Yes we've had both the torential sudden downpours/thunderstorms and the heat, but I have to say that I'm a summer child through and through. There's a reason I was born near the end of July and it must have been a serious mistake that it happened in the northern hemisphere! Yep - I worked through the heat and enjoyed it for the most part.
I'll bet that flax would look lovely in front of something with big bold leaves, but nothing too tall or it will just overwhelm the flax. The contrast with the flax's delicate foliage would be very interesting.
Well, chores and bedtime beckon. Talk soon everyone!

That is a LUVLY way to do your dahlias ginnylynn. It's gonna look GREAT!
So Ginny, what kind of plant is your favourite right now? Is there a particular plant that will dominate or be repeated throughout your gardens? Yes, I'm being nosey again ;)
I wasn't worried about the HVX thing; you know your stuff!. Plus I'm pretty careful after each and every Hosta I handle. I only had one case of HVX and that was a Hosta Patriot I bought at Home Depot before I really knew any better.
Erynne
LOL My favourite plant is dahlia... no wait... lily... uh, maybe it's really chrysanthemum... oh no wait... it's yarrow... ohhhhh!... I mean dianthus... no!... my all time favourite is roses... oh, but what about... milkweed... oh! oh! I know!... it's gotta be sundrop... ummm, maaaybe... violet/viola/pansy... or...
You see my dilemna :-) All of the above are repeated throughout my gardens except dahlias, which are confined to containers. If I didn't have to dig them up every fall, hands down the winner would be dahlias, and I'd put them everywhere!
ooooooo ginnylynn you're my kinda gardener ^_^
Hee hee! I just want the dahlias to start blooming in June and continue blooming until November... and be hardy in zone 5... is that really too much to ask?
That is a huge project. Looks GREAT
Thanks! I never did learn to crawl or walk before running ;-) There is absolutely no way I could section this off and just do a portion at a time over time. LOL Patience to me means waiting until next year for the perennials I grew from seed this year to bloom - and I don't always do that well. I'll sometimes end up coming home from the local nursery with a mature one in hand too.
June blooms are easily doable if you pot up early in a sunny spot inside. sigh nothing can be done about the zone thing. Even I don't try pushing the zonal envelop that far LOL
Unfortunately, my 5 cats don't understand about not eating mommy's new sprouts. I tried last year starting them in the locked up plant room under lights, but there's not enough room for bananas and other tropicals being overwintered, all my seed starts, and dahlia starting too. And I have no good windows for sun exposure anyway. There is only one window that has a southeast exposure. All of the rest are northeast or northwest and shaded by three huge mature maples. Oh well - such is the life of a northern cat owner - I guess I'll survive :-)
sigh space is always a factor for starting everything at once. I wish you a catproof greenhouse in your future ginnylynn.
Thanks - I appreciate the good wishes :-)
New photos have been added to my Landscaping blog. I also posted some pics of my spring tulip garden here http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/t/ginnylynn/9577/
Erynne, if the one you have on watch didn't alert you again, try removing it from your watch list and adding it back again. We'll see if that works next time.
Enjoy!

Wowee Ginny, those are great photos and your plans came out very well!
Ice Cream looks like it could be a little dish of vanilla ice cream in a raspberry bowl....yum yum!
Your combos are really eye-catching ....I especially love 'Ballerina', 'Black Hero', and 'Orange Princess' together. And that last one of 'Ballerina' and 'Black Hero' looks like a painting. That would be a really cool cross stitch pattern!
I just ripped out a bunch of tulips bulbs from the front garden I'm redoing but they were really plain red or plain yellow. I put them in a pot as I came across them while digging and thought the kids might want them but the next day the pot was empty and tipped over....geez just disappeared!
Thanks for the show (again)! I'll see if I can fix the watch thing!
Erynne
siiiiiiiiiiigh......... I love plants, in my heart, but I'm much too prosaic and pedantic to talk the way everyone else does (I only end up sounding boring)
That's why I don't contribute that much, but I sure love the enthusiasm of everyone here :-)
You all have such lovely plans & gardens. (does that sound kinda jealous - I am....... kinda..) I'm really happy to enjoy your be - a - u - tiful pics!! Just wanna drink 'em in - Thank you, thank you, thank you !!!
Thanks Erynne. If you would like to use that pic for a cross stitch pattern just let me know and I'll email it to you (without the copyright logo).
Thanks for your enthusiasm Tallulah41 :-) You don't need to sound like everyone else. Just be yourself and post away!

What a beautiful picture - thanks! I'm only 5'3" tall, so many people are taller than I am. I'm not short, they're just hogging the sun :-)
Hi Ginny,
I would love to try and chart your photo for my own personal use (not to be distributed, sold or profited from). It has clearly defined colour schemes and lines. You got my regular email.
Thanks so much!
Erynne
I'll send it off when I get home this evening Erynne. Photos of the finished product would be nice too :-)
--Ginny
Ginny - you're tall in my books lol
I'm 5' tall..... shrunk a bit in my years LOL
just wait until I'm my mom's age of 89 - then I'll Really shrink LOL
Wow, Ginny, you have been busy! It's fun to see the transformation of your property in such a short period of time. Really amazing progress, great ideas and pics.
Sandy
Thanks Sandy :-) I'm glad you're enjoying the tour.
ginnylynn what make are the lily solarlights? I MUST have!!! Thanks.
Good question. I'll check when I get home this evening. I got them at Home Hardware.
OK. Checked those Lily Solar Lights when I got home last night, and nada. Not a single marking, not even a "Made in...", except a shipping identification number stamped into the base. I didn't keep the packaging and the instructions that I did keep have absolutely no manufacturer's information at all! From that I will assume that these are a cheap offshore knock-off of another company's product. Bummer - I hate finding myself supporting those crooks, however unintentionally!
Check inside the battery area
I never thought of that. Thanks, I will... and I sincerely hope I find an actual company name in there :-)
Ginny, what is the name of the plant in pic 2 of 9 that seems to be spilling over with pink flowers? Looks really cool!
Erynne
