Thanks!
CLOSED: This one?
This is a soldier/leatherwinged beetle (Coleoptera: Cantharidae); likely in the genus Chauliognathus - see http://i.pbase.com/u36/tmurray74/small/32261750.CRW_3234_RJ.jpg for an image. They generally are considered beneficial, as both the larvae and adults are predators on other small arthropods, including aphids and caterpillars. Adults also may feed on pollen, and actually may assist in pollinating some plants.
http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/72/ looks like it right?
Thanks sooooo much!
Yes, that is the most likely one.
I think this beetle is Chauliognathus marginata. The dark band on the pronotum is different from the dark blob on C. pensylvanicus.
I saw these pics in BugFiles because I was going to add a pic to C. pensylvanicus, and I just got through reading about the differences in the species. So, I went to look and see if there was an ID thread. What do you all think? This is from Bugguide:
"Very similar to C. pennsylvanicus, but pronotum has wide dark band, instead of an irregular dark spot. Elytra of C. marginatus often more extensively dark than pennsylvanicus. C. marginatus is also somewhat smaller and is active earlier in summer than C. pennsylvanicus."
You got it, claypa - I didn't look closely enough before replying. Thanks for the detective work!
Ohh did you report my error yet?
Ill report it, thanks claypa!
No, I figured I'd see if there was agreement on its ID first. YW!
:-D Reported and fixed, yayyy LOL.
