My Very First MG Ever!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

After seeing this forum, and all your pretty blooms, I decided I had to try to grow some. So I ordered some seeds from some company(I'll have to go through e-mails to discover who it was) and planted all the seed by our fence. It has some morning sun but is shaded from our fierce afternoon Texas sun.

Then nothing.....for a long...long... time.....I sorta assumed since I didn't germinate the seed before planting, etc etc, no go....and decided oh well, I'll try some more seed differently next year.

Then a tiny plant....that could have been a clone to one of our weeds......but rather than pull it out, since it WAS by the fence, we let it grow.

Now look.......isn't she pretty?

I'm so excited.

She is barely to the fence....about a foot away. Will she grow faster now? I was hoping she would cover it with lovely flowers all summer. Am I dreaming?

Pam, she's very pretty. Love the dark colors. I don't think one vine
can cover the entire fence. Hopefully some of the others will sprout
and you will get better coverage.

Congratulations, that is a nice looking flower! What a treat it flowered when the vine was so short. Jackie's right, you may have to plant more vines. How long is your fence?

Huge!

6 feet tall by maybe 75 to 100 feet. I planted lots of seeds. But I've planted thousands over in this area and nada!

I'll be happy if it covers part of it.

i never get anything to grow in mulch chips. i always have o clear a tiny spot where i put the seeds then let germinate then move mulch back around them. some seeds need light to germinate.

Cute vine! Congrats!

It looks like it might possibly be "Star of Yelta" (I. purpurea).

And I do think they need some sunlight warming the ground to germinate.

This really is planted in dirt. When we were mulching is when we found it, and decided not to pull it because it was by the fence. So we mulched around it. And believe me....our ground is plenty warm...so much so that if you don't mulch, all the moisture in the ground is just sucked out! If it didn't have mulch....it would be toast!

It does look like "The Star of Yelta", doesn't it? Wow, cool name. I am going to see if I kept the package from the seeds to verify.

Thanks All.

Pam, how exciting for you! I remember the thrill I felt when my first morning glory was successful. I'll bet you'll have more and more germinating soon to join this lonesome one. And your bed looks so pretty. Welcome to the morning glory addiction!! ^_^

Oh no....ANOTHER plant addiction.....like I don't have enough already! :-)

Good thing we have lots of room to plant more!

It is not an addiction.

It is an OBSESSION! LOL!

What's funny is, even though I can not find the package these seeds came in.....I could swear it was a blue flower.

Do they run true to color...in all kinds of soils? Our soil is mucho alkaline.
