Magnolia Macrophyllum and Triplets seeds

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I must plant seeds for the Macrophyllum and triplets magnolia and would like to have some suggestions, etc. as to how and when to plant them. They should go in soon I would think, but do I sew them in a flat or do I plant them individually? Things like that I would like some input. thank you in advance.

Jberger, magnolia seed deteriorates very quickly when not stored properly. If you have been storing them in the fridge in moist pearlite or peatmoss they might be OK. By now the seed coat should have begun to split. I grow my magnoliag in a communal pot fot the first year. Next year as the buds begin to break you can repot them. If you think the seed is viable plant 6 in a 10 inch pot about 1/2 to 3/4 inch deep. They shoild be up over the next few weeks. Robb.

Robb, thank you so much for the great information. I have not looked into the bags yet.
They were packed by professionals at the nursery and refrigerated but they were afraid to put them up for sale because of the age, so I am going to check them out and if they are o.k., they can put the rest up for sale. I just was not sure how to proceed to plant them. In flats, like sewing or as you suggested ....I have plenty of black 10" pots so I will just do it that way. How about water? do they like it wet or on the dry side when in the process of germinating. I do appreciate your help.

Jberger, they should have fairly constant moisture... but well drained. You have to maintain high humidity so that the seedlings can shed their seed coats, otherwise, the first leaves can not unfold. After they poke up from the soil sprinkle them daily with water until the first leaves appear. If you join the International Magnolia Society, you can order fresh properly stored seed in March of each year. My magnolia seeds were planted in April and came up in a week or two. Have a look at the seed, if it is split and the root is emerging you could pot it in individual pots, otherwise I would plant in communal pots. Robb
