The surgery was successful and the pt lived!

You are not going to believe this. Last Fri. I dropped a 3cu/ft bag of wet mulch on some lillies at the edge of one of my beds. These had gotten up to about 3ft. You should have seen me on my knees, yanking the bags off. Scrabbling around trying to pull off the other crushed plants. You should have heard my shrieks of anguish when I got down to their poor little snapped off stalks. Oh! It was such a sad sight to behold. Visions of what should have been raced through my head, not to mention the sense of wracking guilt that seared my very soul. Snapped off in the very bud of youth!

Well! Rather than toss them on the coposte pile and chalking another murder (lily-slaughter ?) onto my belt I thought "hmm you started out in orthopeadic surgery...". Out came tape (needed to make a cast) splints (couple of twigs) and the camers (have to document the proceedure right). There was still a thread of skin on one side of each so I knew we'd have some circulation to the upper stalk so that was easy. Now we just approximate the raw edges. Stick the splints in place. Put on the cast and voila, off to recovery.

One week later they're still alive! Not one leaf is wilted. I can finally start looking myself in the mirror again although I still get guilty feelings when I look at their little legs all bandaged.

Well, your surgery looks as though it was a success. Who knew? What a great idea!

I know it's not funny, but the way you told the story sure is! Hope they survive and bloom their little heads off for you.

Great idea! Be sure to post pics when it blooms.

Do you have a cure for mistakenly cutting off a thick lily stem about 2" from the soil?? Happened when I was getting rid of excess muscari. Oops!
