Planning a Shaded Bed

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

What is the name of that red centered one, the main pic on his homepage????

Hey, Tir, my Lady in Red hydrangea grows in my shade bed. It's about 3 feet tall in its third year--spreads out more than up. Would that be too big?

I also have astilbe, Japanese holly fern, toad lilies, Persian shield, hosta Guacamole, azaleas, spiderwort, hellebores, and daylilies in the same bed. Like 'em all.

If you are interested in the Lady in Red, mine has done wonderfully. My bed does get some sun and it has gone crazy so far this spring.

Sorry, Tir. I don't know the name of the caladium on Bill's home page. I'll bet if you ask someone on the co-ops chat page they would know.

thx cocoa!

pbtx---those are awesome plant choices! this lady in red, is it a true red, mauve or pale pink???

I have another whole section shaded along the drive wanted a border of hydrangeas!

Endless Summer hydrangeas. Anyone know where these are in Houston? They are repeat longer bloomers.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

I think it depends on the sun exposure. Mine is in a full shade corner, and is a pale pink, which is very pretty. My dad's is in dappled sun and is the same color. But I've seen photos and descriptions that say it's supposed to be red, fading to pink. Unfortunately it's not a repeat bloomer, but it's still a very pretty plant.

I also planted an Endless Summer this year. I got it at Home Depot and it's pretty small. It started blooming about 3 weeks after I planted it, though. I have that one in dappled shade. I wanted blue, but this one can't make up its mind--it has both pink and blue. :)

Since those are deciduous, you might want something to go in front of them. Hellebores are evergreen, and such a pleasure when they bloom in the winter. They're slow to mature, though.

Oh---yeah evergreen would be nicer huh.....hellebores I like those but have only noticed them in pics....but perhaps a double row as you've suggested---sounds perfect for my spot!

To funny, lady in red isn't even red!

I've got SO much to learn about plants!

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

I think this one is called Lady in Red because it has those pretty red stems and veins. Also, the leaves turn a beautiful rust red in the fall before they fall off.
My flowers don't fade to red either, as the PF says they are supposed to do. They just fade to white.

I'd send a photo, but it's just been beaten to death by the wind the last couple of days, and looks pretty sad today.

Okay, tried a PF search for "calidium" did I spell it wrong? Says no results!!!!!

At least you got a "no results" rather than did you mean stadium? Grrrr! Did you get thru the search?

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Thanks DP! I knew I'd goofed somehow.

Pod, actually I'd rather a spell checker ASK "did you mean stadium" so I'd KNOW I'd spelled it wrong. :(

Thank-you for the link Marylyn!

Agkkk. I recall the box from Sam's saying mine were "Florida" but now see there are MANY "Florida" varieties of CalAdium ;). Shoot. Hmmm....

And checked out the prices on the co-op but looks like Sam's had the best deal. They only carry their bulbs in the spring though so might bite and mail order some. :)
