I have some 1/2 "cuttings from a blooming oleander. Does anyone know the best way to propagate them? I have tried sticking them in the ground in the past and lost every one of them - this was before realizing successful propagation is a bit more involved.
thanks
Linda
Hardy red oleander
I have better success with semi-hardwood cuttings this time of the year. Softwood cuttings are better in early spring. I remove all the leaves from cuttings and put them in soil-moist all the time. Another option is put them in water and check them daily. As soon as you see root sprouts, put them in soil without damaging the roots. The hotter the weather is, the more likely you can grow them.
1/2" doesn't sound like you have a long enough stem. you need at least 1 node in the ground at least 1" deep. i like 2 nodes in ground,2nd node just covered with soil.all leaves stripped off except top two, and if they are pretty mature, cut 1/2 of them off.keep moist, in shade. takes awhile for these to root, but as long as they aren't dried up and the stem looks alive, they are doing thier thing.try it and good luck sally
never tried that, chrissi, but i will. we have oleander in tx.
Here is what the cuttings look like. I have them sitting in water right now. I know I need to strip the leaves but unsure of what next.
Several ways to go as suggested here and as I have a lot of these cuttings, maybe I should try each and see what works best here.
lovetropics - I haven't heard of soilmoist before. Do you do all your cuttings in it?
Sally - what type planting material would you use to get them to root?
Chrissy _ Your suggestion is easiest - and it is in the 90's here already- takes lots of sweat to get anything done in the garden now!
Thanks for your input - this is the greatest gardening site!
rosie, i don't want to run in front of lovet, but i think she meant put in soil, keep soil moist. . she can correct me if i'm wrong.as for my rooting medium, i have two . i dug a hole 18" deep and filled it in with old red clay native dirt, about 3" deep ,then added 3" sharp sand left over from construction .worked it all together, kept doing that until it was full up to the top of 6" frame around pit. if i wanted to root a bunch of anything ,i might use that.especially if i was going to over winter. when i do, i just use one of those 3 forked ,hand tools to dig down and lift the soil. the sand drains well and makes it easy to lift the plant out.pot up then.the other medium i use is plain old shredded tree limbs that have composted several years into fine, peaty like dust.i screen that into a wheel barrow then pot up and stick cuttings.according to your picture, you have a bunch of cuttings on that one branch.i, personally wouldn't try to root the branch as it is ,but take the little side twigs off and root them.if you only want to root a few things,i would buy the PLAIN miracle gro potting soil , and mix with equal size bag of top soil .i've had almost 100% success with that.oh, and always pinch off any blooms on cuttings.and yes, i love this dg.you can spend all day 24/7on it and not get through all of it. sally
