What size pot for morning glories

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I ordered 9 morning glory plants and am putting up two 98"x98" cross link for them to climb on.
Could someone tell me what size clay pot to put each one in? Thanks........

What kind are they? Karen

I think that most of them are Japanese or real funky ones. The lady who sold them to me said they need some depth for the roots but not width........that she grew hers in gallon containers last year. I have the perfect clay pots which are deep and not wide. I was going to string wire but have changed my mind now to just putting up chicken wire 8 ft. tall and across the width of my potting shed.
Thanks everyone so much.........i have never grown them

Are you in a hot area of Texas? You might consider plastic instead of clay...my clay ones dry out so fast!!!!

Ok, ByndeweedBeth, you are the second person to say that so I will put them in plastic pots and use all the clay ones I have on the front screened in porch.........thank you for telling me that.

For small variety like kikyos and sunsmiles I put about 6 up to 8 per 4 gallon pot(2 plants pergallon) and the large flowers with the long vines about 3 no more than 5(about 1 plant per gallon) or the blooms are small. I also feed them and that helps them grow too. Japanese Morning Glories like rich loam soil, feeding and adequate water with good drainage.

Now I don't know what I am doing.............even if I am getting 10 different kinds from DG Market place, would you put several in one pot anyway?

Did you want to grow each variety seperate? If you want to keep varieties seperated then one in at least a gallon or more pot would work. I hope that helps. :)

gessigail, it may boil down to whether you care about cross-pollination or not. If you don't want the 10 different vines to cross pollinate, then putting 1 vine per gallon pot should be acceptable. You would want to isolate each vine from the other. If you don't care about cross-pollination, then you could plant multiple vines per pot. However, the pot would need to be a bit larger for each additional vine you put in it. I have not gotten brave enough to put more than 4 vines per 5-gallon pot.

If you want to collect the seeds and keep the varieties seperate, just plant one per pot. Otherwise, trying to track which plant the pod is on can be challenging!

The Japanese Morning Glory comes in a lot of sizes and the needs will vary. I have put 8 youjiros in a 4 gallon pot and they grew 10 feet and stayed smothered in blooms. For the larger vines like the Akatsuki or Heian series they need a lot more room. 5 large flower vines in a 4 gallon is indeed pushing it(but with feeding I got by with it lol!) For the larger vines 1 to 3 in a 4 or more gallon seems to do the best.

...you can buy clay pot sealer which really helps prevent the clay pots from drying out. I've used it the last few years...works like a charm!

Thanks so much , Sandy. I don't want to have to take all these pots back................they are heavy...............that is exactly what I will do!

You can also use the water absorbing crystals. That is what I am doing in my clay pots and it works wonderfully!

I have a lot of work to do on my outside plants in this drought and high winds. Thanks for the suggestions.

Just a hint. I have put baby diapers in the bottom of mine. They work great!!

Gessiegail - Where did you buy your plants? I am seeking some plants as opposed to seed because I'm so late to getting my seeds started.
Thank you!
