CLOSED: Itsy Bitsy Spider

(Zone 7a)

Out digging in the yard and ran across this little fellow. What is he? Is he a keeper?

Difficult to tell for sure from the angle the photo was taken, but this might be a small species of wolf spider (family Lycosidae) - see http://www.afpmb.org/pubs/Field_Guide/Images/originals/Fig.%2030.jpg for one that appears similar.

Very similar but not quite the same. Thanks for the hint, though. Now I at least know what he is.

After further review, I believe that a second possibility is a running crab spider (family Philodromidae) in the genus Thanatus - see http://www.canadianarachnology.org/data/spiders/29998#image
These often are mistaken for wolf spiders. BTW, If you chance upon another one, try to take a photo that shows the eyes.
