pruning white pine

rhinelander, WI(Zone 4a)

is it ok to prune pinus strobus to encourage upward growth to recover from
deer browsing ? what time of year is best for this pruning ?

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Best not to prune at all - after it's had half its foliage removed by deer, the last it wants is having any more removed!

let it be a shrub ? thanks for your input over the years, Resin, i guess my
point was that i noticed trees that were shrubs for a very long time, with many
branches at ground level, with the tops browsed away--- after awhile the red oak
die off but resprout from the roots, white pines finally get enough strength to
send a strong leader up above where the deer can reach, ditto with balsam fir.
pruning some of the many low branches helped the fir and pine, also pruning
to the one strongest upward leader with the best chance of reaching above the deer
browse. jim
