I'll go to the country!!!!
Becky's Spring Swap, follow-up thread
We went to Hart's last spring, down in the Shenendoah Valley... had a grand time!
I'm hoping Bobbie got a piece of that coral honeysuckle, because then she'll quit eyeing my little one, wondering when she can whack off a cutting. (Just kidding -- it's growing well, and I'll bet we can layer a start from it this year, even.) I did a trade with a Texas DGer last year for coral honeysuckle because Hart was especially looking for it... I received such a nice big plant that I not only gave Hart a pot last spring, I also kept a smaller piece for myself, which I split with Becky this spring!
Did you or Wyldflowr get one of my little potted American honeysuckle shoots?
Howdy all - just surfacing after a day of work - I had to play catch-up on work due to ignoring it this weekend - with visitors and the swap I put work on the back burner! Silly me - I have been buried in editing financial documents all day - and will be for the next month! :-)
Wanna thank everyone that came and contributed in making this a success - a big ole thanks to Chantell for co-hosting! Also, thanks for all the gifts I received, plants or not! I WILL be planting tomorrow once I have delivered my files :-) I had a GREAT time - received great plants and can't wait to host the next one :-)
Chantell, I love that photo of Chloe with the lambs ears! Awwwwwwwww!
I've grown both the variegated culinary sage and pineapple sage both here (zone 6) and in Manassas (zone 7) and neither ever survived winter. Are you sure it's pineapple sage, Ruby? I have a variegated pineapple mint that is hardy. Could it be that? It looks a little bit like sage. Wish the stuff would spread so I can share some.
Edit to say: Jody, no thank you....just looked at the plant ID forum to see which one it was...cant' chance THAT one...but thank you any way!!!

Critter I don't know what all my mom (Wldeflwr) got, besides some tomatoes that she is sharing with me! I cried when she said someone had a big hosta to go to a home that no one took!
I am sorry I missed you gals, but after the previous weekend nightmare there was no way I was leaving dh with the auger alone! He calls to me honey I need a band-aid and I say ok and go inside to get the antiseptic wash and a band-aid. I come out and he is pinching a spot on his arm and I say let me see it and he lets go and I see meat! I had to take him to get stitches! Then he says he shouldn't have told me till he finished with the holes! Sigh... so he had to rent the auger again to do the last 2 holes for the new deck, thankfully it went smoothly, the concrete has now been poured and he says we will start building the deck next weekend (if it isn't raining!) So while he did that, I supervised while cleaning out the bed next to where he was working, you just never know with men!
I haven't ever done a swap, so I wouldn't know how to go about organizing it, but I could be persuaded ;)
phew- thanks again for all the treats I have spent all my extra NRG planting for two days- in other words, I'm like a pig in schit. what beautiful weather and now calling for some rain- perfect.
and am keeping in mind what will be in shape for the next swap
I haven't even started!!!!
Worked till 7PM Sunday and today I went to a nice cook out with my Group. 35 people! More food--more pigging out! Got home after 8PM.
Yeah! Rain tomorrow!--and I could be outside planting up some stuff. Then I have to go to work at 3PM--and there goes another day! Same on Wednesday.....Bummer! Won't get anything done until Thursday and Friday.
Tired......sitting in the outdoors in the sun most of the day. Had some shade, but then the sun moved around and it was hot.
Gita
Now I'm confused -- I have to check whether I received American Honeysuckle or Coral Honeysuckle . . . .
It did get hot as heck for awhile- I had to cool off. I planted a large clay pot with a bunch of (clearance) Caladiums from last year that are finally going to town, plus put five Naked Ladies bulbs in with them. and some golden creeping Jenny to fill and trail, and the whole pot goes in the shade by my mailbox.
and will be planting a new 'succulent' garden.- a spot with tree roots but midday sun that other things struggle in.
Chantell and Ruby- you have to find one of those wooly leaf sages, get big sort of rounded lobed leaves wtih lots of fur- for the dollbabies to cuddle.
Sally - if you find me a pic or a link I'll look for it. Doesn't sound like anything I have....but now you have my curiosity up!! I'll have more sedum for you in a bit once they've put on some growth - just pop me off a reminder.
I think I promised a picture of the blooms of the Naked Lady many of you got from me.
Again--the leaves come up in Spring and grow long and lanky. They just sit in a pile, sort of, until they whither away. Than late July or early August, up comes the bare stem and the blooms open uo in a cluster on top. NO leaves at all! She is all "naked".....
Gita
Gita: I am so very very very pleased with the Naked Ladies from you and Jody and Larlienda! I am going to have a fantastic front yard come summer!!! I am so excited! Thank you! Thank you!
Thanks everyone for making me feel so welcome!!! I really enjoyed it. I spent the rest of the week-end outside, and got most everything planted. Special thanks to critter and miata for the ride and the company, and also to becky the wonderful hostess. I am so glad I stumbled onto DG and this forum - you all are a great bunch of folks and I look forward to the on-line chats and get-togethers :) ... terri
Beck - did ya see your pic with the ice in cup above? ^_^
Gita I know those by Magic Lily or Faerie Lily I have two monster clumps of them and just love when they burst up out of no where, they are the purdiest flowers!
Thanks for the tomatoes! I can't wait to get them planted, just know not to put them in pots in the driveway, deer ate the top off of the cherry one I had planted for my salsa garden!
Hi guys!
Wow!!! I am sorry I missed this gathering! What a fun time y'all must have had! And look at all that yummy food! I am glad everyone had such a good time. It just wasn't meant to be this time.
I am loving all the phots. Chantell... you are looking GREAT girl!
Karen
Karen - missed YOU!!!! Gotta make it to the next one...ok?!!!
Silver sage or Hobbits foot sage is the really furry thing I referred to- I think I saw one at Longwood. link here
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1075/
Of course it doesn't like humidity and slugs love it..... But with care, in a pot, maybe you can have fun with it awhile!
Gosh Hart - So glad that you set me straight. IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL WHO ASKED ME FOR PINEAPPLE
SAGE - I goofed folks. I just went to plant files and Hart was indeed correct. I gave each of you pineapple mint. Gosh, I have been calling it sage for several years now, I think. I hope that I haven't created a problem for anyone. I hope that you will find some use for it. ha-ha The laugh is on me!!!
Ruby
Mine has never spread at all, I mean not one inch in three years, so don't panic that you've planted something that's going to run wild. It's nothing like the other mints for spreading.
That's great, since Pineapple Mint is also something I've been wanting! It may have a better chance of being hardy for me than the sage, too... Thanks, Ruby!
No worries, Ruby!!! I'm excited to have one that's hardy here...mint or not...put that little ole puppy down a ways from the Chocolate mint (from Jill last year) that's popping up now. Chloe loves these things..every time she sees me rubbing my finger on a plant she grabs my hand to put by her nose. How funny is that?!?!?
It's very hardy, just not a vigorous spreader. Actually, for me it's not a spreader at all. I wish it would spread some.
That's so cute, Chantell. I think we have a junior gardener in the making. LOL
Love the piks! GREAT to see the faces of those I haven't met yet. Sally....whenever you want to meet up to exchange the lemon balm let me know. I work during the day, so a Saturday is probably best.
My daughter saw the piks and said "I want to come to the next one. I like gardening!" So there you have it! I am SO glad that you all had such a good time.
My neighbor has a lemon verbena plant. I am in search of those to put around my garden. The mosquitoes didn't bother me once today while I was sitting over there, but they chewed me and the kids alive in my garden. There's no standing water anywhere in my yard so I don't know where they are coming from.
Anywho....love you guys much! I'll get to see you all one day soon.
I'm taking you at your word, Hart... just tucked my pretty pineapple mint into a corner of my newly made-over deck bed. It's welcome to spread some, as long as it doesn't strangle everything in its path. I put your 'Crater Lake' veronica nearby, where it can semi-cascade over a rock... I want some of my special plants right by my sitting bench! :-)
this is a belated "THANKS!!!!!"
fun was had by all of us & i'm glad my young ones behaved somewhat :-)
we had a long day and didn't get home until 10:00pm....add on the extra hot sunday and monday and i'm still recovering!
wish i had time to talk to everyone more & i'm so sorry to have missed happy
next time i hope i can just focus on the swap....ok, i have to admit focusing isn't a strength, so perhaps i should just say i hope i don't have anything else to juggle ;-)
noobie- I have a mosquito fern I can share. it spreads and I'm forever thinning it out. It works great for keeping mosquitos away. Some folks break off pieces and "wear" it when working in the yard. It gets a nice yellow flower in the fall. Let me know if you would like some.
noobie- I'll get it to you somehow soon..
Happy to say- I've done really well keeping all my swap things alive and hapy this year.
Sorry to say- I am a sicko- I spent money on a plant today. WHY???? I felt like I had to make a sacrifice to the goddess of nurserywomen, I think. And it was cool purple sedum Purple Emperor, big like Autumn Joy leaves but purple. Hoping Chantell doesn't have a big old hunk of it and planning to send me a piece...
and Mom wanted marigolds, so I split a six pack with her. I'm not exactly head over heels for three marigolds LOL must be a corner of the garden for them somewhere.
curious about mosquito fern, which must not be a true fern. I have rubbed catnip on myself and hoped it kept skeeters off.
I'll make you feel better, Sally...LOL My Purple Emperor (now you had to KNOW I'd have that one) is 4 years old and has never really "taken off" - can't ever imagine getting a "big hunk" of it in this lifetime....but it lives on - so I let it keep its place. Hmmm...wondering - did you pick that up at Lowes? Reason I ask - I was driving past ours when PURPLE jumped out....course I was already past but remembering thinking - hmmmm, gotta go see what THAT was out front in those 4" pots. ROTFLOL
Ha ha!
We'll see if I can grow it~~
I am so into purple/black foliage this year its crazy but cool. This one was a 4 inch pt at farmers market, marked 4.25 on sale (to suckers!!) now if it hadn't said sale I probably would have decided not to spend the money. LOL
Purple black and limey green as in harts creeping jenny, -knock me out! If my grass dies in two pots out front, plan B may be a black EE, some golden creeping jenny and some silver fuzzy plectranthus or dusty miller
Picture is my new succulent area in progress, thought the Emperor would really snazz it up
