Found this on an Austrian pine in Lebanon, OH. It's a very systematic looking pattern, almost like a weird series of brands. We can't figure it out. Is this an insect or a parasite?
Thanks for any info.
Can you ID this odd set of wounds on an Austrian pine?
...or a bird.
Sapsuckers (I think they are members of the woodpecker clan) tend to make these kinds of holes in trees. They are ultimately after insects, whether existing in the tree or attracted to the sap flow from the holes made.
If you post this over on one of the bird forums, I bet you get an absolute ID in a wingbeat.
Sapsuckers sure do that. They're pretty good at getting their lines straight too.
Thanks all. Did some searches for sap suckers and that looks like the answer. The straight lines seemed so weird.
