My neighbor is giving me about 7 yews(don't know the type yet) and some seedlings from the arbor day foundation and if he has any left, some garden soil he's getting from a landscaper he said I can have that too.
I'm so excited since I was on a spending hold for awhile till we get some more contracts for our biz. Hubby did a side job today and got $50 for the kids, so I asked my son if he wanted to go buy some flowers with his $ and he said yes...
There's always a way to get something without spending your own $. YAY!!!!!
freebies
That's awesome, Jen!! Way to score, big time!!
So my neighbor gave me 7 seedlings about a foot tall. 2 washington hawthorns, crape myrtle(YAY!!!), white cornus dogwwod, golden raintree, eastern redbud and 1 is either another eastern redbud or a sargent crabapple. 5 of them have leaves already.
Any thought on any of these????
Heeeelllllllooooooo out there!!!!!!!!!
Hello!....Don't have any answers to your questions.....just replying to your Heeeeelllloooooo out there.
I have a sargent's crabapple. It's a very slow grower. Mine's about 6' tall. It was 5 1/2 feet tall when I bought it in Sept. '04. Also, be careful of cedar-apple rust. Mine gets it and there's not much you can do about it, except cut all the eastern red cedars down in a 5 mile radius around your house. Other than THAT, it's really beautiful and smells wonderful when it blooms.
I don't have any problems with my dogwood or redbuds, except that my one redbud would like more sun, I think.
Nice going without spending any $$!
I love redbuds and every kind of dogwood. They both hang over our drive and bridge into the Atlanta house. It's like the country in the city when we come home. Don't know your crab, but we have several and ours need annual pruning. If you have a variety that looks good natural that would be good. Can't speak about hawthornes and I'm glad your stoked about the crepe, but they're not my favorites. I especially dislike them all sawed up and always comment that someone has committed "crepe murder". I know they are much loved, so sorry in advance here. See that I'm cross posting, but here I go.

P.S. You made a post about orange and purple flowers mixed together awhile back. DH came home with that combo in impatiens last year and I was aghast! Well, I thanked him for trying and stuck them in to a bed against the cottage. They looked great! So good that I'm repeating it this year.
Hi Jack, welcome to the NE forum!
So Harper my kids will be in high school when it's finally full size????
See, Laurel sometimes I know what I'm talking about.... lol :)
Did I ever imply you didn't? I really hope not If so, I'm sorry.

Oh no, that's not how I meant it...I meant it like I sometimes even amaze myself...my hubby says I always think I know what I'm talking about.
Let's see... how old are your kids now? They're pretty young, right? Maybe the tree will be full size when they finish their graduate degree.
5 and 1 1/2
Arbor day also guarantees them so if they fail to grow they'll replace them. Pretty good for free trees!
Hi, Jen! I have a golden raintree that I catalog-purchased about 4 or 5 years ago. It was also about a foot tall. Now, it's about five feet, and last year it produced it's first bloom - it was gorgeous! It's not bushy - not a lot of branches yet, but someday!
DGers are the BEST!
Wow! That's a lot of great stuff!!
I know, I felt bad I had nothing to exchange in return, but of course she was trying to get rid of all her excess plants. It was too hot to bake anything. I have to come up with something though....
Dgers are the best and it all goes 'round. A person from this forum sent me heirloom veggie seed. The seedlings that I grew were enough for me and two other gardeners here in Georgia who lost their gardens in our recent storms and tornadoes. One is a DG gardening couple. That couple is now relocating to a farm in Virginia. The husband will stay here while the wife will relocate first. They are splitting the plants I sent so that they can start their new garden up there and have their current garden going down here. This all happened because, when I came to this forum early on, I posted that I was trying to grow more heirloom vegetables. So kudos to the N.E. forum too (as if you need them).
Another gardener from this forum was generous in sharing flower seed when she saw that we had damage from the weather last month. I feel so honored by the generosity of what is, on one hand, total strangers, but on the other DG friends. Thank you.
Last week a DG gardener who lives near Maypop came to visit. She loves cuttings, especially fragrant plants, so I offered up the place for her to go to town. I was so amazed when she came with a slew of beautifully rooted shrub cuttings. Two wigelia (one variegated), a honeysuckle shrub, a red hydrangea, a camelia and two different JM's :). I'm not even sure I'm describing or spelling these correctly. How kind. I feel like she gave much more than she got because she left with a bunch of cuttings and I got actual plants. Now I need to learn about shrubs.

...feeling warm and fuzzy inside...
My neighbor called me over to his yard yesterday he has even MORE plants to give me!!! He had his front and side gardens around his house landscaped and they took out a rose bush, a pine tree and couple of what looked like scabiosa. He may have a hydragea, if they don't have a place for it.
How awesome!!!!
flowerjen - i have planted all the tree your neighbor gave you from teh auburn society. here is a pic of one of the redbuds. This was a stick and was laughted at. Now it is over 12 ft. tall and beautiful. I especially like the heart shaped leaves. I now have 3 eastern redbuds that were all sticks and have since purchased 3 other varietties. - love them
Cool Jen! Great neighbor. Bill - do you have Forest Pansy? I love it.
the redbuds grow pretty fast - I have a section in my yard i call the stick farm that is where i plant these in used pots that plants come in - until big enough to look at. As fo rthe others I have not had much success - the hawthorn will grow, it has nasty thorns on it, i planted in the wood line and it lost, the dogwoods did not fare much better, i have two that are large (6 ft) and still haven't flowered. same with the crabtree. the golden raintree is still down there, although all the tags have worn out so its anyones guess what is what. for the $15.00 membership you get 10 sticks.
yes i do. the leaves are great especially the new growth which is deep red to purple. for some reason mine had a lot of die back this year and was late to leaf out. it did pop a few flowers.
Audubon Society or National Arbor Day Foundation, Bill?
two of the eastern redbuds had the same thing happen two them last year after transplanting them that spring. They came back gang busters and no problems over this past winter. I had to trim them last week so they would fill out instead growing for the stars.
good catch - arbor day - always screw that up.
Hee hee....
Nice red bud, can't wait to see mine, 5 of my sticks are full of leaves. 1 was full of leaves until my almost 2 year old got a hold of it. ugh
I never had the patience with those sticks. I check the box for them to not send them. They are a great organization.
The redbuds grow quickly. In three years it is ready to plant where you want it and by year 4/5 it is getting spring flowers. And I have 5 varieties of redbud and a total of 9 redbud trees. Good thing i use a calculator at work.
I have an 86-yr.-old friend who has a lovely cottage garden. You wouldn't know she's that age - she's so spry and active! She mows her own lawn, transplants, and makes rock borders all the time.
Today I went over to help her weed, and she sent me home with all kinds of goodies: bleeding heart, a huge hosta, rose campion, lady's mantle, a few rock garden plants that I'll have to look up, and a few ground covers. Next week she's going to give me some foxglove, kerria, and some other stuff. She's so sweet!
Awesome! Bleeding hearts are on my wish list.
What a great neighbor, and a great gal!
And tell her that I said she's quite an inspiration to me!
New freebie even though it's not of the plant variety. Got it from our church/school, they are re-doing their playground so all play equipment is plastic, some kind of crazy law in NJ. I guess little Johnny once got a splinter...boo hoo. Well good for us, we just had to pick it up and repaint it. Hubby and my son will finish up with the painting today.
Oh how cute is that. Great deal, love those freebies of all kinds. So how did we all survive those heavy wooden swings and tarred playgrounds anyway?
We didn't - we're all scarred for life! LOL!
