Holly Help.

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

My holly only has two leaves on it... I had to hand pick the dead ones off from last winter.
What's wrong with it? It's still alive to the bery tips, Ive fed it and keep it watered religiously.

There are zillions of hollies; which do you have?

Is this a 50' mature tree? A 15' mature shrub? A bare root liner?

All these features make a big difference in answering or diagnosing. You may only be seeing annual drop of old foliage, and nothing at all is wrong with your plant.

I dont remember the name of it. It was in a 1 gallon pot so is pretty small. Do hollys usually take this long to leaf out?

Holland, OH(Zone 5b)

How long have you had it? Did it "leaf out" last year? VV's request for an identification is the basis for a correct diagnosis. Without knowing what kind of holly, this is just a guessing game at best. Could you post a pic?

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

It hasn't leafed out this year but here's a pic from last year.

I bought it last summer on sale at lowes.

Did you keep it outdoors over the winter? If yes, then frost damage.

I didn't even know you could keep a holly indoors.
Do you think she'll make it? The limbs are still green to the very tips.

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

It isn't good to keep them indoors in a heated house, but if it is (as it looks to be) an Ilex aquifolium (European Holly) cultivar, then it is only twig-hardy to zone 7b, and the leaves and roots rather less so, to about zone 8/9 when in a small pot. So best kept in winter in an unheated greenhouse or similar in zone 7a.

Whether it will recover or not is hard to say; if the roots have all been killed, it might not survive. It may yet make it though, if it has just been defoliated by the cold without all the roots killed. Keep the soil moist (not dripping wet!) but don't add fertiliser, that can be harmful when a plant is recovering from a major setback. European Holly is late to leaf out (plants in the wild here have not opened their buds yet, or are only just starting to open them), so be patient.

Ohhh, thank you so much resin. I was so upset because it will be a beautiful bonsai if it survives. I planted it in honor of Hillis` late father. He liked odd ball plants.

Thanks guys! You're all priceless!

Ill remember to better protect it this winter. Phew!
