candyinpok -- You really started something with this little guy. I have fantastic memories as a boy growing up in the old growth fir forests of Oregon. I'll never forget the "whooka, whooka, whooka" call of this "Woodsman of the North" when he would land high in a big fir and then begin his slow, steady, hard knocking that left behind those huge (relatively) trapazoidal holes. Just don't have those kinds of experiences here in southern Arizona.
Look who came to visit
I've always been in awe of these birds. We've been fortunate to see him every day for a couple of weeks now. We have used logs from downed trees to sort of terrace our back hill and they have rotted well and apparently are offering him a feast. I haven't tried pictures again because he scares so easily. Just watch him in the early morning out my kitchen window. Greatblue, you're correct to mention his call, I recognize it above all others and know when he's made an appearance nearby. I'm really gratified to learn about all the other fans of the Pileated who are at Dave's. rntx22, interesting shot with him in shadow like that. Is that a telephone pole?
Yeah, he was on the side of the pole and the cormorants were all perched on the wires. It was getting dark outside and I had to really lighten the photo to be able to see him. He has an unmistakable profile, even in poor lighting
nanny and crazy - what an amazing bird!
I will not be jealous...I will not be jealous...I will not be jealous...I will not be jealous...I will not be jealous....!! LOL!
Very very cool pics of the Pileated!!

The pileated's have some really scary looking feet don't they?!
New to the site...John and I love to watch all birds...I take a lot of photographs and have had little success in capturing good shots of that bird...GREAT SHOT.
