Anywho, I just signed up for WWOOF, World-Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms. To give you a quick idea of what WWOOF is this is a quote from the site..."Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms, USA (WWOOF - USA) is part of a world-wide effort to link volunteers with organic farmers, promote an educational exchange, and build a global community conscious of ecological farming practices." I plan to leave to go to my first farm here in September and would like to be out for 12-24 months learning what I can.
I have this small problem though...since I will be volunteering I plan on using Greyhound to get around as much as I can, it is cheaper then a car. Since I will be on the buses I will need to pack light and that there is my problem. I have never been a backpacker and thus I do not know what all I might need to be ready for anything I come across. I have a little list of things do you see anything that I might could use?
One person tent
hiking backpack w/ water blader
small sleeping bag
knife
rain gear
small first aid kit
soap dish
tooth dish
work gloves
windwater proof lighter
LED flash light (one that you shake to charge)
compass
road atlas
Greyhound System Timetable (it is a 300 page book that has all the info about the bus routes)
sun screen
digital watch w alarm
watch battery
digital camera
memory cards
*not sure how to do the clothing thing yet I would think that 3 pairs of cloths would be normal
Is that a WWOOF is see...
Hey, this sounds great!
You know, it seems like there was a similar thread, only someone
was thinking about items to put into an emergency kit or something
along that line.
I'll see if I can find it. Anyone else remember this?
Karen Marie
Yeah, I am into the all natural herbal medicine so I will be making my first aid kit all herbal. I still need to start my research on what all I should make and take with me to go in the first aid kit...
i'm not much into backpacking and camping so i can't help you but what you are doing sounds exciting and certainlhy different. good luck. i i was doing that i would need a generator to power my computer, t.v., stove, etc. LOL
good luck
Don't forget a battery charger and extra batteries for the camera.
yeah thanks, I though of that last night and I found a solar powered charger I might try...
Wow, what a fun thing to do.
Don't forget a good pair of work boots!
and a journal. Oh gosh how exciting for you.
Best Wishes on your adventure.
The work boots are still up in the air...they are heavy, hot, and take up a lot of space...but I will be working on a farm...so...
The journal is a must, but if I get the extra money I will buy a EEE labtop for $300. They are about the same size of a journal and only weight 2lbs. Since I do not have any family or friends that I could mail things to I would have to carry around journals that are full but with the eee and my little portable hard drive I have I could store all my photo, writings, and bring some ebooks too. I wonder if I can find a solar charger for this...
I am wondering what you are packing in. Do you have a a hiking pack? Those are awsom for travel. They fit real nice and have support for lower back. Holds all kinds of stuff including Sleeping Bag, tent and all...
Well still think you need boots. perhaps wear them instead of carrying, and cary nice comfy shoes, like moccasins!
LOL, being a mom, I 'd say pack 3 work outfits, some shorts, sweater or hoodie, one nice casual attire.
I love that you will get a laptop/notebook!! Will be watching for posts.
Now when does this adventure begin?
Judy
You might consider a wireless plan that includes data, and get a smartphone. You'd be able to access e-mail and DG (!) with it. If you do decide on a solar charger, be sure to read reviews and get a good one. It needs to provide reliable voltage or you may find your electronics' batteries not holding up like you hope.
...that is a good idea but I would have to pay for a one year plan up front. Man I am starting to get a traveling office going here; digital cam, mp3 player, laptop, portable hd, smartphone...lol.
We have one of the shake to charge flash lights, but it was 30 bucks and you shake like crazy and its dim. I have a wind up charge radio/light combo thats much better- more light for the effort
Test out that solar charger before you rely on it too.
Remember you probably can buy some basic things on the road
Nylon zip off pants /shorts might be a good idea- nylon dries much faster than denim
Big heavy ziploc bags to be sure all that electronics stay dry
