Flowering Maples Seeds

I was wondering when/how to collect Flowering Maple seeds. Do you leave them on until the stem turns yellow or brown? Will they fall off or disperse and I need to put hose over the seedhead?

You may lose some if you don't put something to catch the seeds on the pods. I take mine off when they are brown.
