It was 38 deg. with I got up this morning but I looked outside and the back yard was white with frost. It was a total surprise and I hadn't covered anything. I quick ran outside to look and am so bummed. Frost on my lilies, peonies, clematis, etc - all in bud stage. My delphiniums were already in a wilted pile on the ground. Guess I'll find out when I get home how much damage there is.
Nasty surprise
What a bummer. Maybe some things will recover by the time you get home goldfinch. Crossing my fingers and toes for you!
I feel for you, had the same thing happen a few weeks or so ago. Some of them are recovering, but none were showing any signs of buds when we had the frost.
Good luck, goldfinch! Give us updates on how everything turns out!
Guess it could have been worse. As far as lillies go, from what I can tell right now, I only have about a dozen that are looking pretty sad. Not sure if they'll bloom or not this year - but there's always next year. Three small peonies got hurt bad. My delphiniums are shot but if I have to loose something I'd rather it was those than the lillies. Various other perennials have some damage but don't look like a total loss.
Thanks for sending your good luck my way! Now, let's hope this is the end of frost this Spring. By this weekend it's supposed to be in the high 70's and low 80's. Go figure.
supposed to get down in the mid 40's here tonight, I've seen frost at those kind of temperatures.
Wow it's been hot as heck here......93 today and 99 yesterday - sigh! I want it to get cooler again.
It's 65 here and we're supposed to be in the low 80s this weekend. Flying up? :) LOL
:-) I am TEMPTED, believe me! Hopefully it'll cool off by next week.
supposed to be warm here also this week end so I know I'll be busy cutting steaks for all the partyers here on the lake LOL have a good holiday weekend and be safe !!!!

It's about time it warmed up up here!! I was beginning to think we were in the next ice age...
It's been in the 80's for the last several days, and today was a lovely 69°, and low 70's for the next couple. Hooray!
We got off lucky last year here in Texas, but I'm afraid we won't this year. It was up in the upper 90's last evening still at dusk.

We're freezing up here! Temps have ranged from 30's to 50's all this week. They're saying we're in for a warm up fingers crossed. Frost hit some areas but missed our place. My lilies and other plants seem to be fine for now. No buds visible yet since they're in the growing phase.

I feel your pain, goldfinch! Overnite low Monday night was 27 degrees here. Global warming, I think not!
mattsmom those cold temperatures we're having are what global warming is about. The name global warming is a misnomer. It really should have been climatic change which is what most scientist now prefer to use but the media doesn't like it since it doesn't sound as dramatic as global warming.

mattsmom, did you end up with any frost damage?
I wonder if some of this is coming because of all the volcanoes that are erupting all over. I know when cracatoa went it precipitated a major famine in Europe. In fact they say it was one of the causes of the French Revolution. There was so much ash in the atmosphere it blocked out the sun causing a late winter and late spring and a cold wet summer that caused failure of the wheat crop. It is weird how we're having earthquakes all over including here in st. louis and dormant volcanoes are springing to life and new ones are showing up all over the globe. In st. louis we've already had more rain than we usually get all summer. I'm not complaining. All my plants are 2-3 times their normal size by this time of the year and are blooming like mad.
We also have greater technology to let us know what is going on all over the world at the drop of a pin. These things always happen, we just know about it sooner now than we did even 10 years ago.
That's true, the earth is a living breathing organism, and these things are happening all the time. It just seems we don't get them in the clusters we've been seeing lately.
These things happen all the time. The scary part to scientist is that they're happening faster than ever before. That's the part that's not normal.
yehudith volcanos are certainly a part of what's going on.

Goldfinch,
Just got home from the hospital (with my son). Can't really see anything damaged, in my quick tour. I am concerned about the buds on my tree peonies. This is their first year with buds. Am I doomed? Becky
I don't know much about tree peonies - I only have 2 and one of my was in advanced bud stage too when we got frost. Guess I'll have to wait and see.
I hope everything is OK with you son.
I had trouble with that 18 degree weather last year and some of my tree peony buds turning to mush. I think it was simply because some of them were in such an advanced stage so early related to the warm weather and then kerplewy! I actually wondered if it permanently effected one of them, but I actually see at least two buds on it this year...better than it being a goner, I'd say.
