Plant or weed?

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7a)

Please tell me she's a plant...I kinda like it! About 3 feet tall and several shoots coming up.

It is kinda pretty.
In my un-expert opinion though, I think it's a weed, as it looks very similar to some of the others I have around here. But, I am not sure, so I hope someone here has a much better answer for you.

By the way ... welcome!!

I've seen those too, I believe it is considered a weed, (presently). I bet Golden Rod and even Cone Flowers were considered weeds also at one time or another. - If you like it keep it & tell your friends they're exotics from Bali! ☺

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7a)

LOL, WaterCan! Thanks, guys. With 3 plants in the whole back yard, I think I'll leave 'er until I get something to replace it. Then she's outta here. For the time being, at least it's green, huh? ;)

Looks like an Oriental Lily to me!

Rhinebeck, NY(Zone 5b)

brooklyngirl, I think Victor is right. It looks like a lily. Maybe a baby lily, not mature enough to fully bloom yet. Hey, leave it, you can always pull later, that's my rule. (and that's why I'm overrun w/ weeds in some of my gardens, too, LOL)

BTW, love your beautiful back yard garden in the city...so envious. What a beautiful blank slate.

Here is a link for pics of some common weeds. [HYPERLINK@njaes.rutgers.edu] Can be helpful when you are not sure, I did not see your plant there though. I thought the same as Victor and Daisygrrl, reminds me of oriental lily. Was it there last year? When in doubt leave it until it flowers.

Patti:

Thanks for that link so that we can heck out the more common weeds. I only suggested that it may be a weed because it looks so similar to some weeds I have out back, in the non-gardening area. And, of course, I have no idea which weed it may be!!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I have to agree....that looks like a Lily to me!!

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7a)

I pulled one out yesterday, and it's got a bulb. Can I replant it, or is it too late?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Put it back - to the same depth. Even if you've stressed it too much for a bloom this year, it will be fine for the future.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7a)

awesome Vic! Thanks!

And thanks, daisy...I envy your space (even the little bit I saw)...I'll keep ya posted on what comes up, and you do the same! ;)

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I vote some kind of lily also.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

looks like a lily to me too.Time will tell.

I dont want to take over the weed thread but, here we go. I pulled this out of a 6 pack of pansies. It looks almost like a tomato, but the starter leaves dont. Its tiny about 2" high now. If you look there was another stalk at one time. I just couldnt throw it away. How would a weed get into a nusery pansy pack?

I have had many wonderful "travelers" from nursery plants.I just noticed monks hood growing in the DL's I planted last July, plants were from B&D Lilies Port Townsend Wa.
I can't id it but maybe along the thread someone knows.

Sherrie:

I've brought home a lot of interesting weeds in nursery packs. Once in a while you get really lucky and you find out that you've brought home a gorgeous plant that you didn't have to 'pay' for. That photo above looks really interesting, although I can't ID it either, sorry. You'll have to keep us updated on what it grows into!!

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

I do think it is some kind of lilly, I have several of them, some taller than other ones, but if you saw a bulb at the botton, most probably was. Once they stop blooming, which is usually before summer begins, I just cut it and they come back for me every year. The one in the picture is from last year, I'll go outside tomorrow and take some pics of them without blooms, you will see that they are lilies. clemen

Did you put some of those easter liliies on the ground last year and forgot about it?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I would not cut it that soon, Clem. The foliage needs to turn yellow first or else you lose all the energy from photosynthesis that goes back into the bulb for the next year.

Vic you are right, not to cut it so soon, but I do think it is a lilly, I have them and they look just like that one.I cannot post pic's until tomorrow afternoon, gotta go to work and make a little living lol, Brooklyn girl, don't pull any more please! Clem

Have fun at work!

cmdelg, thanks for the pics. Pretty! To answer your question, I just moved in this winter. This is my first Spring here, so I'm not sure what's growing in my back yard! I'm so new to gardening, every new plant that pops up is a conundrum: kill it, water it, or smoke it? ;)

Thanks for the advice, all. These lilies were all in an awkward spot, and since I pulled one up, I figured I'd might as well move 'em all. They're a bit droopy today, and I'm trying not to get 'em too wet. Is there much else I can do?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Not really. Probably just transplant shock.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7a)

fyi...i pulled them before i read the posts saying "don't pull them!" ah, rookies.... ;)

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

I think you missed some pretty blooms, but they do not last too long anyway, keep the bulbs/roots for next season and plant them. they usually have such a nice fragrance.......Anyway, too late, you pulled them. Good luck with them next year. You must be zone 7 like me you are posting zone 6, but you are in Brooklyn, where abouts? My sister is in Brooklyn Heights...Good luck with your new house, Clemen

I just stumbled on this thread and, without reading everything (I'm pooped) agree with Victor. Like a Turk's cap lilly. Is that an Oriental Victor? Does not look like a weed to me.

lily. Can't even spell tonight.

Hey, Clemen. Yeah, even without the blooms, the plant itself is kinda cool. I'm enjoying them, anyway. I'm in Park Slope. Bklyn Heights is but a stone's throw away. Gorgeous neighborhood.

Btw, I thought I was Zone 7, then I looked at a detailed map, and Manhattan and Bklyn were included in 6. Was it wrong? I'll go back to 7, no problem...lucky #, right?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

brooklyn, you look like 6b on this map.

There is an updated one by the Arbor Day Foundation. Brooklyn is 7 on the new one. Hard to believe it was not on the older one too. The city temps are, on average, 5-7 degrees warmer than here. I was 6b and, supposedly, 7 now. I still treat it as 6b.

Brooklyngirl, my sister lives in Park Slope, 3rd street between 4th and 5th. She has a gorgeous pond like garden that was featured in Better Homes and Gardens years ago. The neighborrhood is so quaint, and I love the shops and restaurants!
I'll post a picture of my lilles later when I get home from work. Clem

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7a)

Clem,

Random! I'm on 3rd St. between 5th and 6th. Much closer to 5th, actually, so your sis is totally my neighbor. Is she on DG? Would love to hear/see all she's done in her garden.

p.s. As your sister well knows, we live on the most gorgeous street in Park Slope. The trees here are the oldest in the neighborhood, and the sidewalks are twice as wide as anywhere else. Too cool! I absolutely love it here.

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Her house # is 416, yellow door, she is not on DG though. She is a travel girl, always on the road. She just came back from Nicaragua (on Sunday) spent three weeks there. I'll see if I can get pictures of her place. Clem

I dug up a bunch of tulip bulbs. I had to as DH was going to wack the bank and everthing in its path. So I dug them up. They are not healthy as I planted one here and one there. The grass and weeds on the bank took and almost smothered them. Save them or toss them?

Tulips?

Ok Victor I'm a zone 7 now... but with this crazy weather I m still going to make believe I'm a 5 - just in case!! ☺
