Record Heat - Fried Brug Bud

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Aw, I'm sorry, Jerodsmom, you too, Joyce.. it IS heart-breaking. All the anticipation and now, nothing. My heart goes out to you. Kim, ya little agitator, show us some more of yer purdies down there in Alabama.... please ;)

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Ah I've Charles G. blooming as above. My Apricot Queen is putting out buds, so is a noid pink. I'll post pictures when they're in full bloom. Oh, got Vixen cutting late last year, and the thing is putting out buds too. :-)

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Your cutting from Fall is about to bloom? That is wonderful! Fast grower, Vixen be, and a great brug momma, too. What color will it be? Pink? (I kinda like that name......... ;) Gosh, how exciting, 3 more coming into bloom! Ain't it great? I love brugs.

Watertown, NY

cmdeig, I am way up north in NY, but used to ive in New Hyde Park. I have well over 100 brugs and they are all growing even though it is chilly here. We go from very very hot to cold, the weather can't make up it's mind.

Do you only have one brug?

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh NO Patricia! I was thinking of your brugs when I was out in the garden picking melted leaves.. I wondered how your group faired.. I'm so sorry to hear you lost em... That is terrible!
I have a couple that still tried to spit their buds out and they are so deformed.. LOL I want to name on of the seedlings Troglodite.. it's hideous.

Then Rhapsody opened a beautiful dark perfect bloom.. in the back where I can't see it with the camera.. Antique Lace opened up nice, so did Gemini and Mountain Magic..
So Patricia your Vixen I'm keeping for you is getting buds!

Kansasville, WI(Zone 5a)

Thanks AuntB, I am going to try to keep them growing over winter in the basement, even tho the ceiling is only 6ft tall.
Sorry about all the fried blooms.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

The Forecast is back to normal.. 84 degrees predicted today.. Now that's more like it!

You find alot of people here with wells. You are better of going with a deep, Shallow wells tend to dry up during droughts, we can attest to that here.

I have a 275 ft deep well. They told us when it was dug that it should be left to run for 24 hrs before it is used the first time. This then gives it a chance to run the silt, sand, smell, etc. out. If you have it re-dug yuo might want to try running the water longer.

Just a thought -

Dee

ZZ -

I am sorry to here about your heat and the fried green brugs. Luckily the heat hasn't lasted that long. If you loose any of your brugs let me know and maybe I can help replace them.

Dee

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Awwww, better! Joyce, we want to see some blooms, that dark one, Rhapsody the one you haven't tried to get a pic of....yet ;) Any of em, or all... How EXCITING!
Crazy4- Maybe try a couple smaller (or so they say) growing brugs, Charles Grimaldi, Cypress Gardens, Alex (I think these tend to be shorter..anyone?) ... I was able to keep most of Peach Versi and Maya last Fall.. but I whacked up Pink Beauty pretty horribly. I'm planting her huge, rooted "tree" cuttings in the ground this year... There are 2 2-3 ft starts coming from the roots left in the pot, that will be my new keeper plant of her. I need to get her repotted this year, clean out some old stump and trim some roots. Refresh her..So much to do up here... ZZ, we'll wait patiently..

Kansasville, WI(Zone 5a)

Someone said the brugs can get to 28' I almost fell off my chair when I read that.
I have since started looking for the smaller ones. I have Cherub, Sweetheart, and Puppy Love. My fingers are crossed on Peanut. Never checked the size of the seed crosses I planted.
Does anyone know of any other smaller sized brugs?

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Thereaglady, wow I am next to New Hyde Park, actually if you go down my street on Startford Avenue, that leads into New Hyde Park Rd. what a small world!
Yes i only have the one big brug, but RJ from Houston was kind enough to send me some very nice cuttings, they are outside and seemed to be doing ok, I actually think that two of them are getting some leaves, but can't quite tell yet. Where do you put 100 brugs in the winter, must have a huge GH. Clem

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Linda, Inca Sun is supposed to be a smaller Brug. I know it blooms while still small even from basal shoots. I just received one I bought from Logee's. It looks like a basal shoot so I'll see what happens.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Gemini is a darling double white that is small... I just got it not long ago.. darling lil thing!
I have a seedling that is really small.. it's trying to be a double this year, and I just love it. In fact, it's smaller than any brug I've seen except for that tiny Double Yellow I think it was Delisa that had it?? Can't remember.

Dee that is sweet of you. Thank you. Nothing got burned that didn't survive, just made some ugly leaves, and roasted buds. LOL

Here is Gemini

Here is my tiny seedling from last year..

Joyce, how tall is that yellow seedling? It is soooo cute! It ought to make a great pot plant.

Watertown, NY

I sure know your area, had two good friends in your neighborhood. i worked at Rosevelt Fields. I remember a great Carvel Stand, but can't remember the name of that mail street. There was also a great small Grocery store there.

My brugs all go into my basement for the winter. We have a big old house and plenty of room.

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

There is a carvel on Franklin Avenue, Franklin Square, i think that is the closest one. There is also Frozen Cup in Bellerose Village. Roosevelt field is only 8 minutes away from me. Tell me, do you keep lights in the basement for the brugs? Now that I got RJ's cuttings i will have at least 8 brugs, any advise will be helpful, I love the brug forum, it is very friendly! Clem

Kansasville, WI(Zone 5a)

Bettydee and ZZ, I'll put both Inca Sun and Gemini on my list. ZZ could there possibly be Gemini x Peanut seeds on the Marketplace sometime in the future?

That is a pretty yellow and nice size too.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Betty, it's about 4' tall.. the plant is not really that small.. only the blooms... I wish the buds could have developed in decent weather this spring.. it's got undeveloped second skirts this time around.. They are not quite as micro mini as that pic.. but they are still less than 4" long. It turns a real cute pumpkin orange with white stripes.. smells great too! I love it so much... I have seeds from her when I crossed her with NOL last year. I do believe she is my favorite of all...

Crazy4brugs Gemini & Peanut are both doubles. I would think that Inca Sun and Gemini would be an interesting cross! I think something with strong Aurea genes is where the small size with nice tendrils comes from.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

We went from record heat to record winds here... I could taste the dirt in the air yesterday and they say it's going to continue till Friday! Gusts to 40 mph..

Oh to have a normal spring season!!!!

Watertown, NY

We are still very cold and winndy. Going to rain again today. I need to see some sunshine.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Doesn't it seem like we are getting more wind than normal this year ZZ?

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

YES Patricia! I hate it! I never remember winds like this.. except in March.. It's such a battle. I hope your okay there.. I bet your getting hammered with the wind too huh?

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Joyce, Patricia, the weather this spring has been herandous!!! It's windy here too, besides structural damages. I have just about to haul my blooming brugs in and out of shelters periodically.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

This has been a bizarre spring for certain... remember last march when it rained every single day? we went from heat wave to freezing overnight... and now these winds are horrendous! and cold! my poor plants are confused, summer one day winter the next and no rain? I think only the hardiest of plants will survive ;o(

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I'm leaving whatever blows over laying down till it's over.. They are gonna get crooked, but it's better then all the broken branches.. I'm glad the big ones are in the ground..

Geez.

Hang in there everyone!

(Mary) Poway, CA(Zone 10a)

They were having strong wind gusts in the foothills here - but it missed me.

I got all but two plants out of the greenhouse this weekend, but ended up losing 2 days of work to an aching back. Boy I miss the back I had when I was younger. If I was less stubborn I wouldn't do brugmansia. LOL

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

California is not the only one with high winds. I wish this were an unusual situation. Thry come at me from either the Gulf of Mexico or from Canada and other parts northwest.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

the winds scare me cause everything here is soooo dry. I see Oakland Hills fires or san diego fires happening all over again :o( so send rain our way! please! lol!

Kansasville, WI(Zone 5a)

ZZ...I'll be looking for Inca Sun x Gemini seeds. Tks

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Isn't a 4ft mature plant small for a brug? Every year we move them in and out, I think I'll get rid of my tall ones, they aren't as manageable, hit the ceiling and I have to trim the tips off anyway. But I still love them... and I never do get rid of them. I'm with Mary, too stubborn (determinded) to stop growing brugs....but I might TRY to switch to the smaller growing ones....I worked outside all day yesterday, NOW, I need to take another day off to recuperate! Hope everyone out that way is coping with the elements.. I leave mine on the ground too when the winds blow them down, don't really LIKE the "bent" limbs that grow toward the sun, but a wirey limb with blooms is better than no blooms at all.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Actually your right AuntB... it is a small one, but not near as small growing as Peanut or Gemini.. although I haven't rooted and grown out any cuttings from it yet.. It would be interesting to see how small they stay.

I know what you mean about them being too big.. I'm so overwhelmed with brugs right now.. They are all too big! They eat too much too! :)

This wind is destroying any blooms that survived the heat anyway.. what a mess!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Seems ALMOST not worth it, huh? huh? (did I say that?) I've had storms break limbs and knock big pots over, even lost a few buds to heat, but not triple digits and such wind together, poor things. And you..I'm sorry Joyce, I bet they are pretty beat up, they will bounce back quickly... but the lost, long-awaited blooms....how disappointing. I hope for you, even more blooms on their next flush. I waited all summer my first year with them, only to have September frost. I brought them in to bloom out in the basement and remember thinking "Well, these buds better turn into something pretty spectacular, cause if I have to wait until frost every year to get the blooms..... I WON'T be growing these picky plants"... AND - It WAS very spectacular, so lovely and BIG, such substance, and the smell! Just made me more determined to grow them... and learn how to get blooms sooner... I hope you get some weather relief, soon. They just need your special TLC, they'll be pretty again. I'll be keeping my eyes open for not so huge ones.. (ya, right..found a Snowbank last weekend, it followed me home)

As brugmansiacs, we will get pods; it occurs naturally and/or purposefully by hand pollunation. As brug lovers, we MUST remember: Brug seedlings are cute and fun, even necessary to keep us occupied (sane) during the long dreary cool days of winter...BUT they do grow up and quickly. They require much food, water and constant adoring attention, but...FRIENDS don't let friends germinate a WHOLE pod of seed.... Share that seed, trade it away, sell it on Ebay, but DON'T attempt to grow out the whole pod.. (this would be okay in a commercial/professional type environment, but NOT for most residential "I sell my plants to buy more plants" dwellings) We can overcome this "Pod starter anxiety" -(feelings of being overwhelmed as plants advance into puberty) by continuing to post and share thoughts and ideas here on Dave's Brug Forum..and realizing if we can control ourselves at the seed stage, the "OMG, what am I going to do with all these things" feelings, would be "nipped in the bud". - AuntB ;)

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL I appreciate the concern AuntB... and rightfully so too.. cause I already have too many.. but I'm talking about planting the seeds in the garden area in the ground.. if they make it they make it if they don't they don't. It's brutally hot over there.. and the ones over there are doing okay.. they just aren't very pretty.. but they are tough!!
Then if they don't turn out to be a keeper, they will help the garden soil.. :)

This is frustrating.. it's my first Spring with this many blooms.. cause it's my first year with the greenhouse.. it was fun that's for sure.
Not now though.. it's just a mess.

They will bounce back.. I hope in time before the heat comes.
