Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

This bud just cooked.. the calyx was like paper and the bud inside was cooked like spinach! It's way too hot for this time of year.. 102 in the shade today..

Whew!

Oh! same here today! and that is so unusual for where I live in fremont, I am right near the bay. We usually get that nice breeze, but not for the last few days! just a hot wind!
I potted up my 4 rooted cuttings last night and only one looked wilty when I got home today... so far so good :o) was still cooler outside than inside, so I think they faired better outside in the shade :o)
Cant wait for those cool breezes again!

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

People in the northern states want to know why they get blooms before we do in Texas. It's because we have an early Spring and then a very early Summer. It is not uncommon to get upper 90s in early May and then the Brugs just shut down. Northern states really have better growing conditions for growing Brugs.

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Wow guys and we are having unusual cool temperatures in NY, I guess will not complaint, those 100's temperatures can kill of your your plants.Clemen

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Well, we get really hot.. but usually not till July. I'm sure this is why everything is fried.. it's soooo out of the ordinary for us. We are normally in the 70's now!
On the news they said we were 29 degrees above normal..

I had brugs blooming in 106 degrees last summer.. but this is not summer! We are supposed to get a chance to gradually cllimb into the 100's.. whaaa

I hope everything is okay for you oneanjl, I bet you are really uncomfortable with this!

I hope Kell is okay too.. she never has temps like this.. I wonder how hot it got at her place!

Poor Patricia is gone I think.. I hope all her brugs are okay.. she is probably worried sick.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

It seems we are all experiencing strange weather this spring. We have been on the cool side, 50's - 60's during the day, 40's at night. All of my potted annuals are just sitting, trying to decide whether to die or hang on for a few days. I cannot imagine having over 100 degree temperatures at this time, ZZ, and can only hope there is a turn around for you. It is always so good to see your flowers as we have to wait for a while longer before we can enjoy our own in zone 5b.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Thank you Tussee.. It scares me the way the seasons are getting weird..

(Mary) Poway, CA(Zone 10a)

I didn't realize this heat wave went that far north. The air sure feels heavy today. Everything shriveled up, with the exception of Fascination and MEM, and Mountain Magic. It's only supposed to last a few days before we go back to the 70's.

Union City, CA(Zone 9b)

One advantage - I have at least 4 seed pods forming on my C G . they are from 1st flush and a few buds from 2nd flush . It flowers early and the bugs did their job pollenating .
A funny thing - my double white had a flower , then a 2nd - the 3rd is a shredded - on a different branch .
The heat burned most of the leaves on the miners claim , yukon and frosted pink . The double pink finally opened - it's a single - maybe next bud will be a double .
I am watering in the morning and after sun goes down . They said each house is only allowed 100 gallons a day - good reason to go to Gym everyday ,

Anderson, SC(Zone 7b)

Wow! I lived in Fremont for many years & can't imagine you guys all getting that hot - particularly this early in the year! What's going to happen this summer???

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

:o) We will probably have snow this summer...lol! this weather has been soooo wierd this year.
Moms in Olympia area of WA and they are having high temps there too....they just had snow 2 weeks ago! LOL!

Tony, you are just down the street from me! LOL! I'm right at 84 & 880 :o) so I know your probably not used to this heat either! Hope your Brugs survive! I didnt know that UC had water rationing?! I have 9 people living at my house and with all my plants there is no way I could survive on 100 gallons per day! LOL!

All my new rooted cuttings are doing great so far, cept Magic Carpet... still kinda wilty.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Joyce, it's sad to see that shriveled bud. I grew up in Fremont and lived in
San Jose for 20 years and don't remember a May this hot, September yes, but not May. Here, the temperatures have been seesawing from hot (mid 90s) to chilly (low 60s). Some plants look stunned. Winds and storms (nearby, we seem to be part of the Bermuda Triangle of drought) have been fierce. Haven't seen the usual horde of grasshoppers yet. I'm hoping that the dry winter killed off the overwintering eggs. Strange weather!

Watertown, NY

Wish we could send you some cool air. It is very cold here in NNY. I even heard the word snow in the weather forecast this morning, not for me here in the city, but a bit north in the rural areas.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Amazing all the different stories and temps! I can only dream of cool breezes or snow right now! Like thinking of a Christmas card.. LOL Walk outside and it's hard to breathe.

I know some long standing records are being broken these days for this locale.

They are forcasting low 80's for later in the week.. that will be more like it!

I can't imagine rationing water in this heat.. I guess we all have to count our blessings when we can!!

Union City, CA(Zone 9b)

About 15 years ago , I dug a well . I only went down about 15 feet . I ran it for about 15 minutes an hour 4 0r 5 times . The water smelled . I had it tested . It came back a little salty but safe to drink . The reason then was I had a water softener that cleaned itself with salt and it was starting to burn / poison plants . That was when it cost $50 for a farm extension agent to swing by . They don't or won't anymore .
I decided it wasn't worth it . I back filled hole with pea gravel .
Now you can get filters for the salt and since everything is still there , I might rent a machine and try again a little deeper .
I took me a week to run wire , dig hole with hand auger , splice into sprinkler system . So probably take longer to rent and pick-up / return machine and buy pipe Than dig hole .

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

I had a bloom on my snow white brug that only bloomed one day before shrivling up and dying.. it got up into the high 90's and that was all it could take.. it was still in the 90's that evening when it bloomed. Way too hot for it I guess. The temp did not drop into the 80's that night until close to midnight. Supposed to have those 102 temps here starting mon or tues. Oh, goody! Blah!

so crazy4brugs, I'll assume you rbrugs are still inside?

Kansasville, WI(Zone 5a)

Actually they finally made their outside debut today. a little windy but they will toughen up.
Looking forward to lots of blooms, maybe by Aug. but it will be worth the wait.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

oh! Crazy4brugs...thats just so mean ^_^
I would love to be in the snow right now! LOL!

Kansasville, WI(Zone 5a)

I'm sorry, didn't mean it to be mean. Just trying to be helpful. Snows all gone now.

Watertown, NY

My brugs have been out since mid april. We have gotten close to frost, but have escaped. I have buds and a lot of nice green new growth. I still have this years seedlings inside nights, but everything is out during the day.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

lol! I was just teasing! I was sitting here sucking on a popsickle stick and wilting away in this bizarre heat and oh, the snow! LOL! Send it all this way! PLEASE!?

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

Why are you turning your brugs into Popeye food............

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

crazy4b......what zone r u? I am 7a, took mine out and it has only little leaves, can't believe your is blooming..........And for all of those snow dreamers......I DO not want snow ever.............Your thoughts remind though of a twithlight zone episode, it was so hot and every one on the worlds had died except this lady, it was suppossed to be nyc, can anyone remember that one? It is one of my favorite ones, I hope for the CA folks, please, please, I do not want that to happen, I am blowing kisses for good weather to all of you, Clemen

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I'm sorry to hear of the unusual heat wave so early where you're ZZ. Temp. is a bit cool here for this time of year (for us). Thus I've had blooms all through winter up to date. Here is Charles Gimaldi's (cutting last Sept. having been overwintered indoor -- been out sinze frost free date in our zone).

Clemen, I am looking forward to lots of blooms, hopefully by Aug, hopefully 2008!!!
They will be from the rooted cuttings I have purchased. I'd be lucky if my seedlings will bloom this year.

Watertown, NY

Average high for the coming week will be 52, lows 38, and I think rain every day.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Brenda, the mentioned temps. sounds like brug's heaven! I believe they perform best at that range. I too holding high hope that our temp. won't heat up too quickly.
Kim

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

Thank you clem... I was a nice 80* here today! whoo hoo!
still a bit warm for me... but I'm not complaining anymore! LOL!

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

See, prayers and good thoughts work, your temperatures coming down and could take 80's, today was awful, rain and rain and cool temp, 50's. Crz4brugs, just feed those babies like crazy, I always put Bloom plus, and I have blooms all summer ( in our short summers that is, June trough Sept. and Oct through Dec, indoors)
Clem

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

I have not seen our forecast for the up and comming week but I am reroofing a house so I expect it to get real HOTT.

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Kenboy if that is what you need for your new roof, here you go, prayers for good weather for you! Clem

Watertown, NY

I was surprised today to see so much new growth on my brugs and buds too. As long as it doesn't get any colder they will stay right out in the yard. We have had soooo much rain, we have not had to water. I just have to make sure everything is draining off well.

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Theraglady, the more blooms you'll have on yours, the better it will be for me too......Keep on posting your progress. I saw my brug today, lots of new leaves, she is looking pretty good and she is not being bothered by our cold spells, great! Clem

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

Oh, poor Ken.. going to be record heat the next 4 days here in west texas.. probably all over texas. My poor brugs are going to toast. 10am and I just watered them and turned on the sprinklers to ready the yard and everything else for temps over 100 today.... here we go! Ready for a hot, hot summer.. sort of making up for a rather cooler one last year.

Tammie

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

"Northern states really have better growing conditions for brugs" - REALLY, better?? :) Kenboy, I think of you and Maggi as VERY experienced growers... I'm more mid-America than northern, but HEY, I'm more northern than Texas..... I've dreamed and thought of moving to FL to grow brugs....hmmmm, maybe I should rethink the whole relocation thingy? Stay put and haul em' in and out...? YEP. I'm getting a greenhouse (my other dream).. Anybody know where I can get FREE windows and glass doors? Crazy4brugs, if you have a basement or somewhere you can keep them between dormancy and actively growing during winter, you get blooms faster in Summer, plus I try not to cut the branch tips where blooms come from off, unless it's too tall to fit in the basement. I keep it at least 50 degrees down there in winter, I hung 2, 4-bulb fluorescent lights ($10 ea/Lowes-broken plastic panels to cover lights-I don't use them, anyway) I do get blooms off and on down there... I did have war with aphids, but blooms BEFORE August are worth the bugs! If I didn't get blooms till August or September, (not a pretty pay off for TLC May, June, July..., I probably would only grow 1 brug... but with the help of other growers on forums, I've learned how to get blooms sooner in Spring..

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I don't know about up North, but mine are blooming right now. I'm just rubbing it in. lol.

Kim! :oP It's purdy! I can almost smell it from KS!

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

I came home to a real heartbreaking brug. display. Most of my new brugs. for this year and those I kept from last year were either in bud or blooming and like ZZ's mine just fried. I spent this morning taking off all the dried up and wilted blooms.
I was out of town this weekend but it wouldn't have made any difference, when it get's this hot you just have to look forward to the next flush.
