Japanese Morning Glory weblinks?

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Hi everyone!

I am looking for any weblinks about Japanese Morning Glories. I want to learn more about the Youjiro cultivar.

I know that Dee (Derek - MGJapan) had an asagao club website blog:
http://blogs.ebay.com/komeri

Has anyone heard from him? I haven't seen him post in quite some time.

If you Have any good weblinks on information, I'd really appreciate it. Of course, it has to be in English not Japanese! :-)

Thanks for any help!

You could try Google translate. You pick a language and do a translated to English search.

This one has some reading on the youjiro.

I hope this helps. :)

Hey Becky -

What type of information on the Youjiro were you interested in locating (?)...

Perhaps we may be able to compile and advance the information right here on your (!) thread...any attempts to hijack the thread by anyone will probably result in the loss of everyones time / efforts and any valuable information presented...

I've been considering attempting to restart my previous effort at a thread devoted exclusively to the relevance of translating the Romaji terms into English...maybe I will be able to restart the Romaji thread again and hope that it can stay sincerely on topic this time >i.e., without it getting otherwise derailed...

Maybe the MG Forum can recover from any generalized navigational errors...

Staying on-topic is particularly important for the long term success of threads devoted to particularly specific subjects...

Thanks for the link to the asagao club website blog...that's a new one for me and the high caliber prerequisite standards that are declared are particularly noteworthy and historically poignant...as Japanese style (or any other seriously sincere) asagao clubs are often able to maintain long term high quality valuable standards to benefit the larger interested community...

TTY,...

Ron

Thanks Karen!

I noticed on Yoneda's weblink:
http://protist.i.hosei.ac.jp/Asagao/Yoneda_DB/E/PCD2521/htmls/33.html

That Youjiro is spelled Youziro which means Ray white. Have I been spelling it wrong all this time???

Also, very interesting that Youziro cultivar = {Interspecific hybird of Ipomoea nil (= Pharbitis nil), Africa x Ipomoea purpurea (= Pharbitis purpurea), Flaked} x Ipomoea nil (= Pharbitis nil), which is a Japanese strain. What is the African cultivar that helped create the Youziro cultivar? Does anyone know?

Ron - I would love to get more indepth on the topic of the Youziro cultivar. I am just fascinated by these Japanese cultivars and want to learn more about how they created them and what cultivar of MGs they used.

It would be GREAT to start another thread about the relevance of translating the Romaji terms into English. That would definitely educate me on the Youziro cultivar as well as the countless other Japanese created MG cultivars! Please do start another thread about that topic, Ron!

Hey Becky, it is spelled youjiro here.

http://protist.i.hosei.ac.jp/Asagao/Yoneda_DB/E/relatives/04_3.html

and it is indeed spelled with a z somewhere else. I dunno which is "right".

Both the spellings with and without the z refer to the ray white. Karen

What is the African cultivar that helped create the Youziro cultivar? Does anyone know here on the forum? Please share if you do. Thanks!

Well, it has a picture of a African nil right here but it doesn`t specify that is the flower used to create the youjiro. I could be the one or one like it.

This shows the first F1 generation of a African nil x Jouhantensibori
flaked purpurea.

This is where it describes how the youjiro came about.

http://protist.i.hosei.ac.jp/Asagao/Yoneda_DB/E/relatives/04_3.html

To quote the text from this page:

{This is the birth of a strain called "Haneguruma" ("Impeller"). The flower of this hybrid morning glory came to give the impression of brightness due to this due to this extended white band. The author named this new character Youjiro (Ray white) in 1979.

The author then crossed the hybrid plant with Japanese morning glories repeatedly, resulting in a high level of breeding to what I now call Youjiro (Ray white) morning glory.

Besides, new flower forms and designs such as quail spots, the ray flow, and the feathering double were produced. }

End of quote.

This following page shows the results of again crossing a African nil x purpurea hybrid with other Japanese ipomoea nils. It is nil x purpurea crossed with nil again.

The links aren`t working right. If it doesn`t go to the page after you click the link you can right click, then click on copy shortcut. Then paste it on your browser and refresh.

Working with youjiros in my garden I haven`t been able to cross any of them with a purpurea. I will probably try some more. So far I have seen youjiros "take" only with other youjiros and other nils.
