grape vine cuttings

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I put alot of grape vine dormant cuttings in the garden and they are sprouting. Can anyone tell me how long it takes for them to root? I set them in Feb and they are sprouting foliage now.

Don't know the answer to your question, but sprouting is a good sign!

I'd say if they're growing leaves then either they have some roots starting or they're very close.

ok, thanks. I will let em be for a while. I have dormant sambucus cuttings too, that are sprouting :)

Ecrane3, it's so nice to be able to come to DG to get expert advice!

Will rooted grape vine cuttings produce grapes?

Honestly I'm not really an expert...I had a grapevine at my old house but that's the extent of my experience! Your cuttings will make grapes eventually (assuming of course you have the sun, water, etc correct for them of course). It may take them a couple years though, since I've never done grapes from cuttings I don't know how many years, but I would guess within 2-3 years you should have some.

according to an online article I just read. If you take a cutting and root it properly (mine were done the slow way). You can have some grapes from that cutting the next year. Mine are not rooted yet ( I checked) so I will have to wait. I am taking the cutting to a garden sale this summer so it doesn't matter. My parent plant is covered in blooming vines this year.

It took 3 spring movings to get my grapes in a happy place! They are now 4 years old and finally grown past 2' high and are putting out grapes, so even waiting 2-3 years for grapes on newly rooted cuttings is wonderful!

I agree Robin completely. Mine are three years old and just covered with flowers. I had some flowers last year but the squirrels ate the flowers. I quit feeding the birds in my yard and now the squirrels are gone.

Just for reference: we have a CA native grape - Vitus californica "Roger's Red" - and it is finally producing a very few grapes, and has reached the top of our ramada. It was a one-gallon plant we put in four years ago. It took us a while to get the watering right, and we also think our hard clay soil in that area slowed it down. Now, as long as I give it a good soaking (we seldom have rain) once every week to 10 days, it looks great.

I'm looking forward to trying some cuttings to grow along our fence. When do you all take your cuttings? Are they soft or woody?

I did my cuttings when I pruned in late winter. I had all those vines so did 8 inch cuttings and just put them in the ground to the top leaf nodes. If you search grapes from cuttings online there is a great article on when and how to take cuttings and how to get them to root quickly. My way is the slow way.

Funny how this site never showed up on my searches before. Using "grapes from cuttings" I found this: http://www.bunchgrapes.com/cuttings.html

Very clear instructions for both hardwood and green cuttings. Thanks for the tip!
